Sustainable Sea Cliff Cooperative/Buying Club

The Sustainable Sea Cliff Cooperative is a growing and vibrant community engaged in supporting local farmers, eating and growing healthy, organic food. We are interested in working with our neighbors in order to sustain our community, our environment and provide a better future for our children. The SSCC came together when a group of like-minded residents of Sea Cliff and neighboring communities decided that together they could benefit from each others strengths and work toward a healthier tomorrow.

We have been operating as a food buying club, procuring local (mostly organic) food from farms and suppliers in the NY/Tri-State area, plus fresh, seasonal produce directly from local farmers right here on Long Island (Hamlet Organic Garden, Biophilia, KK's The Farm, Seedsower Farm, Restoration Farm). We purchase many types of food in bulk through regional natural food distributors (Regional Access, Neshaminy Valley). By purchasing direct from local and regional suppliers and by utilizing member volunteer labor, SSCC has been able to keep costs down while providing its members with a wide array of organic fresh vegetables, grains, coffee and dairy, plus naturally raised meats and poultry.

Part of the mission of the Sustainable Sea Cliff Cooperative is to start a farm/community garden in Sea Cliff where we can grow our own organic food - working side by side with one another. The co-op hopes to grow enough seasonal produce to support local area food banks as well as its members.

In addition to purchasing and raising food, the co-op provides educational opportunities to the community to learn about the negative impacts of industrial agriculture on our food system, our health and the health of the planet as well as the positive impacts of sustainable practices. SSCC sponsors films, lectures, potluck dinners and other events to raise awareness and educate the community on these important issues.

Membership in the cooperative is open to all and involves a one-time $150 family membership fee ($100 for individuals or $75 for students/seniors), plus annual dues of $25. Members work three hours every four weeks either at the coop, or doing various task integral to the growth and operation of the coop, or on one of the SSCC subcommittees (membership development, food ordering/sourcing, farming and technology, etc).

The Sustainable Sea Cliff Cooperative's main goal is to create a community which prioritizes ethical decisions in regard to food, our bodies and the earth. We also want to share good food and fellowship while working together toward this common vision.
