The Tabarzal is a medium sized date that is semi-soft in texture and has a subtle sweetness, not as overpowering as the Medjhool but with a richness all of its own. Perhaps from Egypt (or perhaps a seedling), it was originally developed by Coachella Valley date grower pioneers M. R. Sheets and Jess Wise (who trademarked the name), in the 1920's and 1930's, when it was promoted at historic Valery Jean's Date Shop on old Hwy. 99 (about two miles from our farm). Until the larger medjhool arrived in the 1950's, tabarzal was one of the largest dates grown in N. America. The original grove near Mecca, Calif, is now gone, but our three producing palms (which we cut from the original grove in 1981) carry on the tradition. Our Tabarzals have won many a 1st Prize Blue Ribbon at the National Date Festival in Indio. We are proud to be continuing this heirloom variety in our date garden. The 2009 harvest began on 9/15/09 with beautiful softer fruit, available only in double orders (2 of our 2 lb. boxes,) 4 lbs. @ $24 plus shipping in a flat rate priority mail box.

North America's finest locally grown dates, certified organic and harvested by members of the United Farm Workers of America.
