The Neighborhood Farm is a collection of market gardens in and around Needham, MA. We started growing in 2008 with 1/4 acre of garden sites located in private yards in the Needham area. We still have 6 gardens in local yards, and now we also have a giant garden on a site we lease from The Trustees of Reservations. Homeowners lend us a portion of their yard and we grow vegetables, herbs and flowers. In exchange, the owners receive produce from the gardens during the growing season.
2014 will be our seventh growing season. We are currently growing on 11 locations in the Needham area. Our gardens range in size from 400 square feet to four acres. We grow all our crops without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers although we are not certified organic. Organic certification is a multi-year process, and is something we may pursue over the next several years.
We specialize in heirloom varieties of tomatoes and garlic. In 2014 we plan to grow more than 40 varieties of tomatoes and more than 30 varieties of garlic. We also grow a full complement of other vegetables, herbs and cut flowers. In the spring and early summer we sell vegetables and herb transplants for people to plant in their own gardens.
We started The Neighborhood Farm because there is an increasing demand for local, healthy food, but there is a lack of undeveloped, reasonably priced land in the Boston suburbs available for farming. This forced us to think of different ways to farm. We were inspired by the victory gardens of WWII and felt that lots of market gardens might be the most practical way to bring a new "farm" to the suburbs.
We are also committed to educating people about farming and gardening. We hope to help people to think about where their food comes from and to encourage them to try growing some of their own.
