ATK&R Farm

The Rhynes (Tammy, Darren, and three children) have been raising dairy goats since 1999 and started milking them for business in 2005 under the name ATK&R Farm. Our youngest daughter (born May 2003) was raised on our own goats' milk. We shipped part of our milk to Central Pennsylvania Milk Marketing Cooperative (located on Rt 655 between Belleville and Reedsville, PA) until spring 2011 and the rest was made into cheese by local cheese makers. We used to market goat cheese under our label, Three Belle Cheese. However, due to work commitments outside the farm, we cut back our cheese business in 2011, ceased to ship milk to the co-op, dropped the weekly farmer's markets, and sold all of our milk to a cheese maker near Washingtonville, PA, and another in Cresco, PA. That didn't work out so in 2012 we sold most of our milk to a cheesemaker near Turbotville, PA, and had some made into cheese that we marketed ourselves. In mid-2013 we decided to discontinue our goat cheese sales and focus on just selling raw milk in bulk with three other local producers to Rocky Ridge Goat Dairy near Spring Glen, PA so we no longer sell cheese. Previous 7 Years: From 2007-09, cheese marketed under our Three Belle Cheese label was made using our milk and the cheesemakers' milk by the Nussbaums of Apple Tree Goat Dairy near Richfield, PA, the Shelleys of Premium Choices near Richfield, and the Zeisets of Millersburg, PA. We also supplied milk to the Barretts of Fallsdale Farm Creamery, Tyler Hill, PA, in 2008-09. In 2010, the Barretts sold their cheesemaking equipment to a fellow Central PA Milk Marketing Cooperative member, Peter Martin of Broadway Acres Farm, between Washingtonville & Milton, PA, and he became our primary cheesemaker in spring 2010. Darren deployed to Afghanistan for a year starting in February 2010, so Tammy and Peter did markets together, selling cheese under the Broadway Acres Farm label. Peter was not allowed by his religion to market cheese online so we worked together to get the cheese to markets. Tammy, her parents (the Kulps), and our children helped market the cheese by providing transportation and personnel to cover farmers markets each weekend in two or three of the following locations: Barryville (NY), State College, Gettysburg, Bellefonte, Lewisburg, Boalsburg, and/or Selinsgrove (PA). We also sold and offered tastings of our cheese at special events that were posted on the Local Harvest site. 2010-2011 events included the Shikellemy State Park (PA) Festivals, Mount Nittany Winery (PA) and Bethel Woods (NY) Fall Festivals, the Great Taste Pittsburgh Food and Cooking Show, and the Christkindl Market in Mifflinburg (PA). Restaurants/Stores: We also infrequently sold fresh plain chevre to Harrison's Wine Grill & Catering of State College, PA, for use in their menu; Chef Harrison's restaurant is located in the Hilton Garden Inn Hotel on 1221 East College Avenue. The Selinsgrove Brew Pub in Selinsgrove, PA, also used our chevre at their establishment at various times of the year. Our Goats and other Farm Animals: We have a mixed herd of approximately 150 dairy goats, of which about 50 are currently milkers. Our herd is comprised of Alpines, LaManchas, Nubians, Oberhaslis, Saanens, Toggenbergs, and Recorded Grades. The farm, which has been in Tammy's family since 1957, is located just south of Mifflinburg off of PA Route 304. We also have a small, growing herd of boer goats (two bucks and about 10 does; 4H projects), seven llamas, two Guernsey cows and a young Guernsey bull, four beef cows and a heifer calf, four dairy beef steers (4H projects), three miniature horses, two regular-sized horses, two donkeys, 13 breeding and market lambs (4H projects), six pigs (4H projects), and several ducks, geese, and chickens. We show at the Union County West End Fair (Aug), Bloomsburg Fair (Sep), and the PA Farm Show (Jan). Oh, and don't forget the barn cats and our 7 dogs - Border Collie (Oreo), Austrailian Shepherd (Boots), Beagle (Stevie), Pug (Roxie), Puggle (Rockette), mutt (Sadie), and English Bulldog (Sadie).
