The mume type of plum originated in China
and was introduced to Japan about 2000 years
ago. Mume was cultivated for ornamental use
as well as for medicinal use. Recently
consumption of ume liquor as well as many
kinds of pickles, jams and drinks made from
the mume have increased. Mume cultivars are
classified into five groups as follows:Ko-ume
(small fruit),Chuu-ume(medium fruit),Oo-ume
(large fruit),Anzu-ume or Bungo-ume(apricot
hybrid) and Sumomo-ume(plum hybrid).
