Urban Fresh Produce strives to grow beyond organic. We focus on improving our soil's health so that the plants natural immune system can protect itself from disease and pest. We use compost and green manures to replenish and build the soil; the result is naturally healthy plants that are able to ward off potential pests and won't succumb to disease. This process is more labor intensive and requires valuable space to be used for composting and growing manure crops, but we feel that it is a vital component to quality grown produce and works to improve (rather than deteriorate) our environment. We never employ the use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides or herbicides. We purchase organic seed whenever possible and always use Non-GMO sources.
Urban Fresh Produce chooses their varieties based on flavor over their ability to be shipped and stored. We choose varieties that are not carried by supermarkets, many that are rare or heirloom. We seek out old favorites that were forgotten after the introduction of modern hybrids but are remembered by old-timers who have never forgotten their superior flavors and textures. We also focus on variety, growing everything from Asian greens to hot peppers and from celery to artichokes. We love special requests; so if you have one, let us know!
As you can tell, we love to garden and we love to talk about food. So stop by our stand at the Saturday Kootenai County Farmer's Market, located on the corner of HWY-95 and Prairie Avenue, our join or C.S.A. and pledge your support to local agriculture.
