BACK FROM THE ASHES The Walkup Heritage Farm & Gardens is located at the historic "Walkup House" in Crystal Lake, Illinois, which was built by the great, great grandparents of one of the current owners in 1856 out of cobblestones hauled 40 miles from the shores of Lake Michigan. The farm itself dates from 1835, and is the one of the oldest in the county. To honor the heritage of the house and family, my wife, Carolyn, and I have developed a "heritage farm" which features native plants, heirloom perennials and vegetables, fruits, mushrooms, and various heritage livestock breeds of farm animals. Carolyn is a nationally known free lance food writer and former member of the James Beard Foundation Committee. (more...)
