This is a pound of wool from one of our Icelandic lambs. It has been washed and was shorn last fall, 2009. The lamb is a black mouflon pattern so there is some white mixed in from the pattern. It is long and silky and will be nice to spin.
Icelandic wool is double coated with a short soft undercoat and long silky out coat which can be coarse in older sheep, but the lamb fleeces are softer and can be mixed together for a nice medium soft yarn. It felts well and is especially good for thick warm sweaters or knit to felt projects.
We raise our animals on a small family farm. The sheep have access to pasture most of the time and are only fed grain and hay in extreme weather. We also raise turkeys and chickens who are outside on pasture in the summer/fall. We breed our own heritage turkeys and let them raise thier own babies when possible. We strive to keep our animals healthy and happy with as much freedom as possible while keeping them safe.
