Wild fennel is more vigorous than the cultivated form and is found in abundance in the Sierra Madre foothills and coastal areas of California. It grows very nicely here in Virginia. It has a distinctive flavor and heavy, sweet aroma. All parts of the plant may be used and the pollen itself is sometimes used as a delicate flavoring agent.
Medicinal: Used as a carminative, anti-spasmodic, and as an ingredient in cough remedies. Contains compounds that have estrogenic activity. Folk herbalists have used it to promote milk production, but is not recommended for this purpose. Any self-medication using fennel should be restricted to whole plant parts since the oil is fairly toxic.
Garden Medicinals offers over 220 varieties of medicinal and culinary herb seeds, roots, potato onions, specialty garlic varieties, and select heirloom vegetable and ethnic flower seed. All seeds are non-gmo, open-pollinated and untreated. Most seeds are naturally grown and a few are certified organic. Our vegetable seeds do especially well in hot, humid climates where vegetable production can be difficult. Our herb selection also includes dormant root stock of ginger, ginseng, goldenseal, black cohosh, false unicorn, and wild yam.
