This was an experiment that didn't turn out as I had expected, but is none the less, interesting. I was hoping for a light red and purple but I added way too much dye! The result is a deep maroon with areas of red and areas of purple. I started with a Romney lamb fleece.
The fleece was not one of our best and the ends of the curls are somewhat matted and there are some second cuts (though I've tried to pick them all out). The wool is fairly fine and soft for Romney wool. I would consider it fine enough for a sweater or a hat. It's finer than the Cotswold wool that I dyed this summer. I washed the wool and then used metal-free acid dyes from Greener Shades.
The dyed wool is available in an 8 oz. bag which turns out to be one very full gallon zip lock bag. I'm happy to answer any questions that you might have about it or to send a sample - just let me know.
