The Petaluma Gold Rush bean has an exciting history laden with adventure. The bean was first brought to the US by a Peruvian whaler who neglected his occupational duties by jumping ship and smuggling the bean to Petaluma, California near the start of the American Gold Rush in the 1840s.This hearty plant produces many flat, kidney-shaped beans, tan in color with specks and stripes of maroon. They have a full flavor that is creamy and meaty. Seed Savers Exchange is currently running a test of the Petaluma Gold Rush Bean in its trial gardens.
