Wonderful Summer Doldrums

My first Blog posting here.  Let's see how it goes.  I send email to my customer lists in Hastings on the Hudson, and in Chappaqua every once in a while.  Maybe I will start using this.

We just returned home from the Cobleskill Fair this Sunday.  We exhibit our beef cattle there.  Being only Grass Fed Beef, it is hard to compete.  We are considering adding grain to the diet of exhibit animals only so we can compete better.  This has no impact to our customers, as those animals would not enter our product inventory.  It would however give us an indication on how well our breeding program is doing compared to other more conventional farms.

On our farm we only have two small fields we cut for hay.  The rest of the fields are split up into pastures.  We run about 11 pasture lots, but hope to increase to about 35, making the lots smaller.  This means more work moving the cows more frequently, but makes better use of the land.  The farmer we purchase hay from is about 8 miles away.  All the hay for us is made, but now we need to get it trucked over here.  Once here we put in our barn, but the coordination in getting it trucked can be complicated.  I wish I had my own trailer, but that would also mean one more thing to do.  Also, since they are in round bales, and sitting outside, I need to make sure there are a couple dry days before I put them inside.  Right now, we are having rainy period, not too hot, but very very humid.  Makes everyone uncomfortable.

Next week we are at the Altamont Fair.  Please, stop in and say hello if your there.  Let us know you saw my blog on Local Harvest.

 Till next time
