Community Farm Table in Alabama

Coming from a city that has always been tainted by many 'episodes', Birmingham has been my home for 38 years, has come along way with its beautiful rolling hills, kudzu, and on the outskirts are the best peaches in the U.S., not to mention an incredible group of local farmers that we buy from.   This summer we created a buzz in the Birmingham Restaurant Scene when we began our series of Community Farm Table 'family style' suppers.  Each Tuesday night, our guests meet and greet our guest farmer in the bar area enjoying hand made seasonal cocktails and local beer.  At 7pm, our guests find an unassigned seat at our long Farm table and are subjected to sitting next to strangers.  Our introduction of the supper comes about with a story from my husband Clif, Chef/owner about our relationship of our Farmer and friend, our purpose of the Community Farm Table and what went into the efforts of preparing for the 4 course family style supper.   "Simple instructions", he says, "take off your tie, and introduce yourself to your new friends, and enjoy life".   Our first guests of the summer were horticulturalist, Dr. Arlie Powell and his wife, Gwen, of Petals from the Past Farm, in Chilton County, about 45 minutes from Birmingham. We incorporated many farmers in this supper, but highlighted the Powells as we get most of our fruit from their farm...here is the menu from June 23, 2009.

Snow's Bend Roasted Beet Salad with Belle Chevre Goat Cheese and lemon-Thyme Vinaigrette, Harvest Farm's Cornmeal Fried Green Tomatoes with Gulf Crab and Smoked Onion Remoulade, Herb Brined Pork Loin Chop with Charred Corn, Tiny Tomatoes, PFTP Peach Relish, and finally, PFTP Black and Blueberry Shortcake with Crushed Pepper-Lemon Cream.  Come join us Tuesdays, through the end of October...www.littlesavannah.com
