Westminster Farmers' Market Report for 06-18-10

Westminster Farmers’ Market Report from Maple Heights Farm

Visit us on Facebook!

Last Friday we had a terrific afternoon at Westminster Farmers’ Market and I am looking forward to another great afternoon this Friday.Russell and I were delighted as we watched “Jack and the Beanstalk” at Button Box Shadow Theatre and our whole family was treated to the music of Patrick Carroll as he played his guitar and sang for much of the afternoon! We are certainly hoping he is available for future weeks at the market. This week, we are expecting great weather and I am looking forward to another puppet show by Button Box Shadow Theatre. In addition, I cannot wait to see Ron and Megan MacGuire who will be performing again this year.I have not seen this incredible father-daughter team perform since last fall and I am truly looking forward to their performance.Tess Rebetsy-Brown will round out the afternoon performances. This twelve year old, award-winning singer, songwriter, piano player usually stops all activity at the market with her original sound. Please remember that our performers are “buskers” and work only for tips. This highly respected practice is an important way to bring local talent to our farmers’ market while introducing you to some of the up-and-coming talent in our region. If you enjoy a performance, consider adding a few coins (or bills) to their “hat”.

More and more vegetables are being introduced each week and I am looking forward to some of my favorite salads over the weekend.Salads can be simple (lettuce and onions with ranch) or complex (including many vegetables and fruits along with a homemade dressing). One of my favorite salads is simply spinach leaves, onion, fruit (oranges, but whatever is in season), and gorgonzola cheese served with raspberry vinaigrette.Salads can be a side-dish or a main meal.I am already planning to not run my oven on the 90 degree day next week and for that day, I will serve a delicious Cobb salad using, of course, the freshest ingredients available!I’ll prepare the bacon and egg on a cool evening. For more summer salad ideas, check this out!

In addition to summer salads, we will be doing some grilling over the weekend.Andy prefers the gas grill (strictly for convenience, believe me) and I prefer a wood fire (strictly for the flavor).Since heating mostly with wood last winter, I am now pretty good at starting a fire and I can get a roaring one going in a few minutes time.I now know what to collect as “fire starters” which includes paper flour and sugar bags, toilet paper rolls, dryer lint, tightly rolled newspaper, loosely packed newspaper, and if we are lucky enough to have one, bits of a greasy pizza box.For Father’s Day, I will get the fire going for Andy and then the cooking process is no harder than cooking on a gas grill. But the flavor from grilling on wood is incredibly different and well worth the few minutes of extra effort (along with the 40 minute burn while waiting for just the right coals). So, it will likely be steak Kabobs with some seafood for the Dad in this house. At the market, I will look to Patty Hurd for one of her delicious meat rubs or marinades (she has the booth with handmade bags, aprons and loads of fudge), I will look for vegetable vendors for in-season vegetables, add roasted potatoes and top the meal off with an irresistible treat from Honeybee Baking Company.I’m getting hungry just thinking about it!
