Keansburg, NJ Gets a Farmers Market

Keansburg, NJ  has a population of over 10,000 people, but is only one mile square. It has no supermarket, and the closest vegetable market is on the main highway, just out of town, which makes it difficult to get to if you are elderly and don't drive a car. Public transportation is very limited.

The idea of a centrally located farmers market has been bounced back and forth for quite a while, but finally got some momentum when the chair for the local revitalization committe met with local volunteers and  Ellen Williams, the 4-H Agent for Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Monmouth County.

The Keansburg Farmer's Market opened this past Wednesday, and did a brisk business in Friendship Park on Main Street. The official grand opening will be next Wedesday at noon.  Space is still available, and for this season is absolutely free, so that farmers can learn more about the town, and the town can get used to buying fresh food locally
