Agropraxis Farm

Developing a diverse, stable CSA has been a constant effort for the last many years. Our efforts focus on continuing to develop the farm and producing for the Harmony Acres CSA. As I reflect on the five weeks that has begun this season a sense of a solid beginning and a bit of disappointment in the offerings compared with typical years.

The shareholders have been really supportive of the mixed start to the season. I try to keep them informed about the impacts our erratic weather has had on the crops. They have been thrilled with the exceptional production from some root crops in particular the radishes. The lettuces had a tough start but have been steadily improving and I’m now satisfied with what is in the shares the last few weeks. The impacts have meant some crops have failed, others have limited production and a few have been good. The net result is a perfectionist farmer that has had a bit more stress in the early season than I’m happy with.

CSA is a bit like a good piece of land. It won’t produce into the future unless it is well cared for.  Weekly newsletters/recipes /news from the farm goes a long way in making a connection. The importance of a face on the farm helps as well. Volunteers have been really helpful this season. A crew of those who pick-up on the farm has made the Thursday pick-up a busy time with many lending a hand in the field. Last week a portion of the group spent energy rounding up (Ha Ha Ha…good pun on Round-Up the toxic herbicide!) the potato beetle larva. I did a check the next morning and the potato patch is the best it’s looked all season. And, kudos to my folks who continue to use their farm bred skills to help out. They celebrated 55 years of marriage this past week!!! What amazing role models and parents they have been.

We’ve experienced the turn to warm weather. At market the customers make note of the change with complaints. I’m glad to see it finally arrive. Nobody is used to the heat just yet so I’m sure that is the main motivator for the comments. We have had just a single day where the high touched 90. This past week saw highs in the middle 80’s with humidity under 60%. Once we are all acclimated it will seem perfect.
