The Winter of 2017 has been an interesting one, as I'm sure you'll all agree. Here in Ohio, it's been extremely mild. Even with an occasional spell of bitter cold, all in all we had little snow and higher than normal temperatures. Unfortunately that meant our maple syrup harvest this year was dismal. We make syrup on a very small scale, but we usually try to make about 10 gallons. Enough for us and a few friends and some to take to our Farmers' Market spring opening in May. This year, however, we only made 4 gallons!
We did, however, take on a new task. We purchased a new "caterpillar tunnel". Basically a high tunnel (for us anyway!). It stands 7 feet tall by 14 feet wide and 100 feet long. It was a kit that came with everything and it was well made with quality parts. However, 2 66-year old farmers trying to put it up in a light breeze was quite the challenge! We did it, though ... and now have 1400 square feet of ground drying out and warming up to start moving early lettuce, tomatoes and cabbage.
So ... hope to see you at the opening of the Logan County Farmers' Market on May 6!
