Slow Life with Real Food

Eating and living mindfully by the beach

Day 1 - Different kind of day...

Today has been a success! We left the house at 10am, saying good-bye to Boris (Guillermo's sweet ol' dog and my newly adopted son), and loaded down with the bare necessities needed for a 2 week motorcycle trip. It ended up being quite a lot. We nixed eating hot food, so we took off the stove and some of the food, streamlining things considerably.

We're at a coffee shop by the San Luis Obispo Farmers' Market.  Amber just left for a walk through the "carnival", which is mainly what it is!  What a difference from any farmers' market that I've ever been at.  Pretty fun, but I still prefer the "old fashioned" kind.

I just came back from my walk through the freak-show Halloween party they call a 'farmer's market'. Okay, that's harsh language, but nonetheless... it's a bunch of costumed people drinking, eating bar-b-que, and looking at one another. Not a vegetable in sight (Guillermo just informed me that he spotted some at the very end of the street). I didn't see any.

We started this trip in the Salinas Valley (picture a Steinbeck novel), and we will be ending the day in Pismo Beach, which is around 150 miles south of Santa Cruz.

The first farm we visited was Mt. Olive, a mini locally-oriented 'agribusiness' (in the good sense) operation. Afterwards we stopped in Templeton to jab with Dick and Kim Rogers of Hollyhock Farms, an organic farm, bed and breakfast, produce stand, and silkworm processing factory. More details to follow... Right now we are scarfing down dinner, then heading off to a campsite in Pismo Beach to set up camp for the evening.
