We purchased an abandoned tobacco farm in 2005, retired in 2007, and moved to the farm to grow a sustainable, environmentally-responsible operation. Our farm is bordered by the Cherokee National Forest, the Appalachian Trail, and overlooks Watauga Lake. 45 acres are forested, 15 are pasture, 5 are garden and orchard. The products we grow include asparagus, herbs, heirloom varieties of vegetables, and fruits. This year we are expanding our crops to include the herbs and vegetables of the Thai cuisine (Thai peppers, Yard-long beans, Thai basil, Vietnamese Coriander). We are also starting tea bushes with expected yields in 2011. In 2009, we added guineas. For 2010, we will add muscovy ducks and chickens. We are a National Wildlife Federation (NWF) certified "Wildlife Habitat."
