Caprine Corner

The baby chicks are growing so fast, they have complete run of the greenhouse and I have had to hang the planters way high.  I hope to get them moved to the old hen house this weekend.  The herbs are   growing well and the tomatoes are over a foot high.  I have put in a few new flats and they are starting to emerge..  Farmer's Market starts in a week, and I hope to have some plants ready.  The shelves in the soap studio are starting to get filled again.  There was such a rush there for a few weeks that my supply was dwindling. The devil goats are going to the sale, or as my son in law calls them the "Ninja" goats, they got out and ate off the strawberries and and broke some limbs on the pear tree.  Easter was very quite around the place and the normal cool weather has returned.  There is call for some good rains the next two  days which will keep the wheat farmers happy.

This is not Kansas????  The temp yesterday was in the 80's, today it is suppose to be upper 70's,(but the wind is really blowing ) what happened to our Spring??  But it sure beats the snow we could be having.  I have the greenhouse all cleaned and the older hens and mama hen and her 13 babies all booted out and moved into the old hen house, they are not real happy but I had to make room for this years chicks, there are 40 of the little darlings enjoying the warmth and space of the greenhouse, and I can now get some seeds planted knowing that the big girls won't be in there scratching around in them.  I burned off a ton of weeds and trash last night,and got the mower running, I'm sure the grass will need to be mowed soon.  The potatoes are planted in the bags and I thought about turning the garden and raised beds yesterday but it is still way to wet.  I have been making the cutest crochet Easter Baskets, some look like bunnies and some are just baskets.  The grandkids should enjoy them. I need to make some soap and get the studio cleaned up,  I have picked up a couple more wholesale customers for my soap.  Looking forward to Farmer's Market opening..  And so the busy  season begins...

Here it is the middle of Feb. and we are having weather like March..  So far no real snowfall, and very little rain.  The critters are doing well, We are sending a couple of the horses to Kansas City to be used by a Youth Ministery, they will be used for trouble youth to find the peace you get when working with animals.  New baby chicks should be in this week.  I have started a few plants but nothing in the greenhouse yet, I still haven't kicked the chickens out.. They really like the warmth they get sitting in there.  The Iola Farmer's Market will open the middle  of April, and go thru October.  It is open from 5:30 -7:30 every Thursday evening.  I will have soaps, fiber and yarn..  There will be times there are fresh eggs and produce from the garden.

I spent the weekend in Kellyville, Ok. at Fiber Christmas in July..  Did very well, sold tons of goat milk soap, some handspun yarn, hand dyed roving and a few felted scarves, purses and knitted items..  I has been so hot and humid that the garden is at a stand still.. alive but not doing anything..  The soap making pots and the dye pots will be very busy getting caught up and ready for the fall and Christmas rush..  I am getting very excited about the business..  Everything seems to be falling into place,, even though the studio is still not done I am well on my way to developing a large customer base and am working hard at getting the fiber animals I want..  next spring should be very exciting waiting on new little Nigerian babies and hopefully some angora  kids and baby lambs.. oh this sound like so much fun..  milk and fiber, throw in a few herbs and life can't get much better.. 

It has been so hot here the garden has stopped doing what a garden is suppose to do.  There are no tomatoes coming on, the pepper plants have a few flowers but have decided not to produce any peppers.. the okra is only about a foot tall and there only a few squash(who ever heard of only a few squash)..  The rabbits are nice and fat since they ate off all the beans.  I have dried up the does, it has been way too hot and they were way down on their milk.  I have plenty frozen to make soap this fall and be ready for the Christmas rush..  The chicks from this spring are really big and  so spoiled.  They are at the deck gate every morning waiting for me to toss out some corn, then they spend the day under the bushes trying to stay cool.. I hope they don't forget that they should be thinking about starting to lay.  I will be redoing the hen house this fall as they have been in the greenhouse, at least in the evening.   

It is  about to open.  The shop is ready  for me to start work.  It has been a long time coming, but the day is near.  I plan to have new soap sliding out the First of Jan.  Then the yarn and fiber area will open within a month(I hope)  I have been moving inventory out of hte house so I sould get the Christmas tree up.  I am so excited, I will have a wonderful place to work to make wonderful goat milk soap and lotions.  My skin really is in need of it and I am sure there are many of you who could use the benifits of a great goat milk soap.  The web page will be up over Christmas.  (son who knows computers will be home)  Merry Christmas to all, and a Very Happy New Year.

New studio being built.

The Caprine Corner studio is on its way up.  The new building is coming along.  It is taking longer than I would like to see but it is underway.  I hope to have it open by September.  I make my first order of yarns today, and new oils and EO are on the way to get some new soaps made.  Check back and I will keep you informed as to how the shop is progressing.
