It's chilly here in GA again......

This is the time of year....you never know what the weather will do here.... we had frost again last night, and it's supposed to be rainy and warmer this weekend, then colder again next week..... BUT, the first day of spring is in sight!  If you are local, check out my events page, and stop in for the First Day of Spring tea party at the garden.... a party just to celebrate spring!!  And, FYI, every plant i checked that was out in the elements last night seems to have survived..... praying it warms up for good very soon! Have a great day and weekend!

Spring is around the corner!

iris harmony.jpgThe daffodils are up and getting ready to bloom in my garden, and I am so glad to see them! It's been an unusual winter in Georgia, for sure.  My house personally got 12 inches of snow in one day.... unbelievable in Georgia!  And we had another episode that was not so bad, only 1 1/2 inches..... but I don't want to get used to that!  I am ready for spring, and all the green that pops up and new life everywhere..... Had a few of my new iris minis bloom yesterday and I was glad to see them, so pretty! Thanks for stopping by!

We are having a Tea Party celebration at the greenhouse.... hoping for lots of local peeps to stop by and check it out, and hang out a spell.  Hibiscus tea will be on the menu for sure..... and other goodies!!!  I enjoy planting all the cuttings, seeds etc. this time of year..... in anticipation for warmer temperatures and sunnier skies. It keeps me going through the winter! Everyone have a peaceful and productive day!

Happy Groundhog Day!

Hi all!  Groundhog day brings out the blogging in me..... so glad spring will eventually arrive, March 20, save the date!  Been busy starting those little seedlings of basil, chamomile, lemongrass, etc. and moving toward the veggie starts.  I am a seedsaver and lots of my herbs and flowers are grown from my own saved seed, some of which I offer for sale here on localharvest.  Stop by and check me out!  Local peeps in Marietta/Dallas/Hiram/Douglasville area, my plan is to have plants for sale by April.... I can't wait for warmer weather, although Chattanooga Chuck the groundhog says six more weeks of cold.... hope he's wrong!!  Everyone have a blessed day!

Lots of Seedlings

Hi, all, things are busy as they usually are in the spring.... just so thankful that I get to play in the dirt every day! I have loads of seedlings coming up.... arugula, kale, collard, chard..... all kinds of herbs... even a few new varieties I haven't tried before. I love a challenge, and like to try new seeds every year. I am trying to grow valerian, I have grown it before but it's been years ago. Growing from seed is generally easy, but some things are challenging! Ok, got tomatoes and peppers in the ground.... got some eggplant going. I have tomatillos, and local peeps if you want some just give me an email and let me know! I don't charge much..... :) All my plant money is going toward a greenhouse we are going to construct this summer. I already have 20 old windows, and just have to figure out where to put the structure. Might have to clear out some briars first! The blackberries are taking over.... but they are so good, it's hard to whack 'em back! Anybody else make a greenhouse using old windows? Did you design your own? or get a plan? I think we are going to "design our own" as we go.... I know I have seen all variety of materials used, including cinderblock which are cheap....we plan on a "dirt" floor at first. Any helpful tips from people would be appreciated much! I'm through rambling for the day.....take care and enjoy your spring!

Blogging......too busy!

Hi all! As you can tell I am not good at blogging! I'd rather be outside in the dirt..... spring has sprung in Georgia once again, and I am very happy to have my hands in the soil and watching all the seedlings pop up, as well as the perennials showing back up. Actually was able to start tomato and pepper plants, as well as basil and a few other herbs, inside this year. A friend cleaned out her garage and gave me a light system she had been given and never used....and it was perfect for growing seedlings. I have always wished I could get the plants going without them turning "leggy" trying to reach the light, and with this shelving system was able to adjust how far away the plants were from the light. Now my tomatoes and peppers are big enough to plant and it's only late March!  Exciting!  So that is what I was up to last night, repotting the seedling plants so they can get even bigger! Going to sell a few, and keep a few. If you are local (West Cobb/East Paulding area) and can get by, please come check out the garden! Lots of Herbs and Perennials this year. Message me first to make sure I am there.....Everyone have a great spring! Until next time......

Summertime in full bloom

Hi, it's been a little while since I updated here as I do most of my "blogging" on my facebook page! Hope everyone is having a great summer so far! We have had a lot of rain here in Georgia, but not as bad as last year thank goodness. :)

I harvested potatoes last week and the last of the peas - now on to green beans and squash, peppers and tomatoes and such! Harvesting kale and lots of herbs too! Cucumbers....maybe I will get some eggplant this year, I see babies!  I love eating fresh from the garden, it's delicious and the other rewards are the satisfaction of knowing where my food came from and that no poisons were used!

Come check out my facebook page and "like" me to keep up.... hope everyone has a great summer!

Looks like spring is finally REALLY HERE!!  yea!  Hostas are up and unfurling, kale is growing like a weed, daffodils are bent over, peas, lettuce, herbs... all are starting to pop up and be visible!  I am sooo over this winter, it was the worst in a while for this area for sure! Just wanted to stop in and say HAPPY SPRING to everyone!  Happy gardening! :)

Busy!

The weather is turning, and I hope for good! So glad to be able to work outside in short sleeves yesterday...felt good!  Everyone seems to be busy ordering seed, which is keeping me busy too! Now is a good time for me to go through my "stash" of seed, saved or bought, do some organizing, and perhaps throw out anything over five years old.  If it's older than that, chances are (for most things) it won't be good...depends on the seed!  (Did you know onion seed is one that won't keep more than a year? After that they are not much good at germinating.)  I also know that if I keep seed more than five years, I tend to get overwhelmed, as that is my main addiction, saving and/or buying seeds!  :)  Guess you could call me a Seed Collector......!  Everyone enjoy their week!  -deb

Happy March!

A bit chilly this morning, they say it's going to be a cold weekend here in Georgia....thanking God I don't live up north where it's REALLY cold, with snow and all that good stuff!  Just sunny and windy and cold here!  Hoping to straighten out my seed room this weekend, it's in quite a bit of disarray as usual....you would think if I organized it, it would stay that way, right? ha!  Hoping also to break up a bit more ground, providing the weather cooperates. And maybe I'll harvest some kale and make some kale chips in the dehydrator! I hope everyone else has high aspirations for a fine weekend - keep dreaming for spring.... i think it's almost here! the daffodils and crocuses gave it away..... :)  deb

Taters and 'maters and peppers, oh my!

Happy Friday everyone! I planted some red potatoes over last weekend and hope to get the rest in the ground this weekend. Supposed to be rainy here in Georgia but.... hoping for a break! Also have some seedling tomatoes, peppers and eggplant, as well as basil, under the grow lamp.  All doing well so far.  Need to get out my seed catalog, i don't need much but i do need some fennel seed... I love to grow it not only to use in cooking, but for the caterpillars! You can see some pics from a year or two ago that I have posted on FB... the caterpillars are beautiful and they become butterflies in the end!  Dreaming of spring - It's almost here!  Stay warm and dry wherever you are if you can, and have a great weekend!  debbie

Asparagus

Hoping for some Asparagus this year, it's the second season after planting two-year old crowns last year... I just saw a video on growing asparagus, and realize I didn't quite do it "right" when planting. However, I did have shoots last year, i just let them go to seed as I had been told to do.  Soooo we shall see....wish me lots of Asparagus!  :)
