Florida has just experienced another threat of a tropical storm :Irene.It was projected to be a category 4 Hurricane and it  did not happen !

It ended up heading towards the Carolinas.

Fear and ignorance are the MAIN  negative emotions that keep us away from reaching out to fulfil our goals.Succumbing and giving in to the bad habits of: Stereotyping,hearsay,rumors,he said she said eyc type of "RATIONAL" leads us to same destination of NO WHERE!

So for those who have  phobias , fed by watching TV and reading main stream media news , it is time to break that indoor static oppsessive and OBESIVE habit and head outdoors! It is about time since procrastinating for so long about growing your own food in the tropics of S.Florida !

Taking a class on growing your own food even if you have no backyard garden is an important step to come close to your goal of URBAN FARMING.

The Options:

If you live in an apartment or studio :Small space productive gardening in S.Florida might be an alternative to choose instead of buying your expensive organic produce .If you lose your job or home and get evicted , then you may salvage your container garden and take it with you!

Growing herbs and vegetables in containers suits the Home of the Hurricanes state.You can move your container garden to safety if a Hurricane hits!

There are so many ways and places   to garden even if you do not have access for a garden.Here are some options:Your patio,balcony,door entrance,kitchen ,roof top  or at a  community garden near by .I have done so  for the last twenty years and I had lots of food  without even owning a property!

For the small space :You can use trellis,hanging baskets,pots as a portable garden medium.

The challenges:

Lack of organic gardening awareness is the most common challenge especially for new comers to S,.Florida.Take a class on organic gardening and dispel the challenge.The tropical heat,humidity,mosquitos and pests etc  are another challenge from Mother Nature.I can teach you how to deal with them , and turn the Lemon into Lemonade!

The possibilities:

I have contributed in growing and teaching organic gardening at seven community gardens for the last twenty years .I remember growing organic crops at a community garden land owned by a S.Florida city for 9 years .More than forty families had plots and contributed in transforming the  neglected minority neighborhood and crime infested city plot into a flourishing /organic FERTILE soil enriched  community garden.It  was later on turned into a LAND FILL LOT by the city.In a TWEEK quick WIMP decision ,they cancelled the TOIL of a decade of farming /labor / fertile soil building /for   a dumping site  land fill!

It is not a secret that farmers during the Great Depressiobn of 1929 were among the Big Losers financially.They lost  their farms to the banks as they could not pay their mortgages.There was another reason :THE DRAUGHT.

Dare to question the TRUTH about the economy and you will face a probe like the S&P Standard and Poor 500 who downgraded the status of our economy to AA+ from AAA!

I personally have experimented with NEEM OIL.It does not kill the harmful pests but it does stop their MUTATION and MULTIPLICATION..I now grow neem trees and use neem leaves in my kitchen as well as in my garden ..No more killing.An OUNCE of Prevention  works better than a Ton of CHEMICAL pecticides ..You will save money as well on the garden center BILL$!

When I was asked to volunteer in fascilitating a Composting FREE class at the Public Service Dept./City of Lake Worth  back in June 2010-I had no idea that it will grow to become a GREEN PROGRAM !

Thanks to the pioneer creative vision of the LWPS director MR.Joseph Kroll , local residents now can obtain affordable compost bins , attend FREE Composting and organic gardening classes ,get help to start growing their food in their own backyards and save money on both  the grocery and trash collecting bills!

When finding a job becomes a full time  and  long term :Mission Impossible" job, starting with a short term self created JOB to PRODUCE our own food is in itself an alternative and  positive contribution in the right direction!

While living in a down graded ecconomy :/14.4 TRILLION debt -Soaring national 9.6%unemployment-Budget -spending cuts etc, people are now asking this question:Are we yet in the depression following the DEEP RECESSION:

Depending on charity hand outs/food stamps/unemployment checks/subsidies etc..contributes to further our DEBT crisis. Tax payers money ill spent  on Local Aid through  NON-PRODUCTIVE programs such as the above , is as counterproductive  as the  tax payers money spent on Foreing Aid .

Growing your own food saves by trimming the municipal RECYCLING costs of  biodegradable  trash  for example:kitchen /yard scraps !.Composting saves on the garden center bill.Composting is a productive practice that transforms inefficient grass yards into productive vegetable gardens that can FEED our families and promote a sustainable self reliant agricultural ecconomy that does not depenf on importing food from foreign countries and recycle the dollar locally rather than send it abroad!

I have some ideas that will balance the budget default on who is at fault for the debt crisis and save a lot of tax payers mony on Medicaid and Medicare.Here is one of the most briliant one:

From my experience as Organic Urban Farmer and my educational Background as Certified Horticulturist and Certified Massage Therapist, I have learned a lot about how to use my body when I do Garden or farming chores.

People who come to my Organic Gardening Class here in S.Florida forget to ask me about how to garden using their body as a TOOL.They are mostly focussed on the OUTER IMAGE whether of their garden DESIGN .They need to educate themselves how to cope with the OUTDOORS CLIMATE of TROPICAL S.Florida FIRST>

The human body adapts to the environment once we expose ourselves to the heat and humidity of SF.Gardening in the air conditioned COMFORT ZONE is not practical.

Here are some ERGONOMIC and Anatomy and Pysiology  tips to follow :

1-Use your body weight when you garden, especially:When pushing,pulling,digging,lifting etc..Use correct  postures hwen maneuvering your body in the garden chores.Listen to your body.

2-Use -and be MINDFUL of -the Gravity factor , when you position your functional and structural movements to do garden work.Remember that gravity encounter resistance from your body, so the less focal points of resistance exerted by your body the more efficient your work.

3-Study Anatomy and Physiology of the HUMAN BODY .There are plenty of learning channels especially if you check out INTERNET resources.

4-Choose the less STRESSFUL time to garden in S.Floida.Early morning or late afternoon where the temperature is not so HIGH  for example.

5-Put on Garden Gear:Wear a hat,a sun screen .Drink plenty of water etc

6-Visit your health professional,chiropractor and make sure that your body is fit for gardening work.

7-Train your muscles gradually.Do stretching exercises to counter the constrictions of musles.Yoga is my best stretching exercise .Massages are very helpful too!

8-Use ERGONOMIC TOOLS that are fit for your body.Try them before you BUY THEM.There are so many tricks to sell you tools just to make a BUCK!Women and men have different standard tools to use depending on their body weight,size  in addition to mental and physical muscular strength/endurance.

9-Train with an  ERGONOMICS educated and gardening experienced farmer /therapist/mentor.

10-Sign up for Ergonomics classes and learn how to keep your body fit and safe while farming or gardening.It is good to KNOW!

There are so many speculations and tradings going on as people watch TV and read thenews of the Debt Default Conferences Battles .

I have a friend who depends on social security for a living so he is now starting to grow his own food .He never bothered to do so before untill the latest news started to emerge about the Great Default.

I beleive in sustainability as an answer to our many social and ecconomic problems that used to be tackled with either  borrowing ,defaulting and or denying either or both as an issue.

Comfort zone created by the culture of Hi-TECH from TV to Cellular and counting...gadget wise!

Virtual reality and Actual reality is not same.Sanity and Insanity are not the same.Being Crazy is not Normal.So we are running away from our Problems and shooting instead the messenger .Remeber problem shooting?

So why now the Social Security becomes the focal point after so many decades of debt  .Shall we raise the debt ceiling or rather seal and stop the debt?

One dollar printed costs us forty cents as a debt to the Federal Reserve  which is printing the dollar and making 4o cents for every one dollar printed and borrowed by the government? I am not sure how the math goes , are you?

Farmers do not collect social security , do they?So growing their own food is the only security!

For the ordinary urban farmer here in S.Florida there are two kinds of challenges.

1-The man made ..

2-The  Nature Made.

Here in Flotrida we have  the EVERGLADES and the once known RIVER of GRASS.Both were the natural feeding water system to the acquifers and water resources.Untill man made canals were dug into the land to carry out and drain the water into the Atalntic and Gulf of Mexico to make room for development .

Now we are crying wolf and rushing to impose fines and water restrictions as water becomes so scarce with the never ending DRAUGHT  !

The climate change is changing theway we do agriculture world wide as water becopmes less available.So man invented a solution :Water banks.

Well , it is not that NEW innovation or discovery as you might change the name of water wells to water banks per se!

Get educated and give those who betray you and sell you in the speculation commodity stock market cheap to make themselves a fortune:TEACH THEM a lesson.

We have $14.5 TRILLION DEBT .China and Japan and UK own more than 4.5 $ Trillion of our TREASURY BONDS!Yes Foreigners own and can put our ecconomy down if they just sell those bonds and forefeight their ownerships of the vast sectors of our ecconomy including BIG AGRI BUSINESS .They have shares in all of our stock market and Business.The Dollar is weekend and the GDP is never as ever as low and BEHOLD!

Some of Our national media that is owned like other businesses of the Media Mogul ,now in the offensive in GREAT BRITAIN for his HACKING and POLICE BRIBING to the Police :has kept us in the DARK about who runs and ruins our ecconomy .Not any more with the internet blogs and freelance journalist/outspoken farmer who choses not to sell his/her soul to a mogul for thirty pieces of silver or gold.

A mogul cab bribe or hack a corrupt politician or chief of police in the case of the British phone hacking/police bribing scandal.But Small  Farmers are NOT FOR SALE!Their land is the land of the FREE SPIRIT!
