Putting the garden to bed

Our plantings of winter rye, planted to provide a "green manure" and enrich the soil, have been appreciated by the local flock of wild turkeys.  They've been scratching up our beds and picking out every seed they can find.  We're going to try one more time, but if the turkeys come back for another meal, we may have to go back to mulching with manure.

We had a good variety of winter greens established before the cold weather.  We are thinking of using such crops as kale, collards and chinese cabbages to extend the season into October and November in 2009.  The deer found this to be the most appetizing of all our plantings.  The time appears to have come to invest in fencing.
