Turkey, Foodball and Macy's Parade

Well, it’s almost Thanksgiving, 2008.  Seems alot of people look forward to this holiday as a reason to overdose on Turkey, football and Macy’s Parade.

It’s amazing to me how we can take holidays that were started as times to honor and thank our creator for the blessings we’ve been given and turn it into a cacophony of capitalism.

So, what am I going to be grateful for this Thanksgiving?

I’ll be grateful for a warm place to sleep when so many others are sleeping under bridges or in cardboard boxes.

I’ll be grateful for the food I have each day when so many don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

I’ll be thankful for my adopted family when so many are alone.

I’ll be grateful for friends who accept me as I am and gently encourage me to be better than I am.

I’ll be grateful for 590 acres to wander around on as I please when so many only have a window box to gaze on.

I’ll be grateful for weekday chapel services when so many around the world are suffering persecution because of their beliefs.

I’ll be grateful for the men and women of the military that sacrifice their time, their families and sometimes their lives so they can stand between me and the terrorists who hate America.

I’ll be grateful for the “peace-niks” who agitate and protest for a better world when so many are apathetic.

I’ll be grateful for my daughter who has turned into a wonderful young woman; not because of me, but inspite of me.

I’ll be grateful for the fact that I can still get out of bed each morning and say “Good morning Lord!” instead of “Good Lord, it’s morning!”

I’ll be grateful to still have my mother around so that I can finally appreciate the wisdom and knowledge she’s accumulated over the years.

I’ll be grateful for Juan Valdez who still pics the coffee beans one bean at a time.  Which reminds me, unlike the Psalmist, my coffee cup isn’t running over…I’m going to get a refill.  Catch you later!
