Lawstuen's Ladies Dairy

Goats, chickens, cows....OH MY!
(Modena, Wisconsin)

The garden isn't in YET!

I have been holding off on putting in the garden and now I know why. A couple of nights ago everything was froze. The bucks out to pasture even had a hard time getting their water. What a year it has been. This week is suppose to be a high of 40's. Let me check that date again...Yep, May 11. Crazy! All is well on the farm. Our kids are growing nicely and very healthy. We will be weaning more in the coming month, so there will be crying coming from the pasture. Both moms and babies hate this separation. Poor things. I made my first batch of soap last Friday. I was pretty excited to have them pop out of the molds. I re-birthed the roped soap idea. We'll see if they sell at craft shows. hee hee!

Another thing that I tried this last week is cottage cheese. Oh boy there is nothing like homemade cheese and when it is cottage cheese - double yum! My neighbor has been after me to make some, so now I'll have to bring he and his bride over a sample.

Happy Planting,

Kidding season is upon us!

We had our last doe kid yesterday with two great looking kids. My-Kind Lilly is the proud mother of Miriam and Aaron. We name all of the kids born on our farm with Biblical names. It actually is a lot of fun. We got to name our first two doelings, their names are Hannah and Ruth. So to date we have: Naomi, Samuel, Moses, Zippora, Ester, Phoebe. The others that were not born here are LGR SF Ranger Walker, My-Kind Star Flower and My-Kind Lilly. We are starting to get quite the herd of goats. I had to invest in a automatic waterer because they kept running out of water in their tub and then they would take it. Goats are a lot of fun to watch and to interact with. Anyone considering milking an animal by hand to supply your family with their own milk really should be looking at getting a couple of goats. They are great animals and don't require all the land a cow does. Whatever you have heard about goat's milk tasting odd - put that out of your head because I have had a raw milk tasting test with my children and they couldn't pick it out. Yes, goat's milk can taste just as good as cow's milk with a little extra care.

Will write more later - I have to head to town for supplies.
