Holmestead Farm

I think there is a dream in each of us that we would like to see come true.  For Marshall and I it was to someday own a farm.  In  2007 we had sold our home in a subdivision just before the housing market went down so we were ready to purchase just at the time when farms were more affordable.  It was a great day to finally own our little piece of the country.

We named the farm Holmestead Farm after our last name Holmes.  It seemed like the perfect name now that we were claiming our homestead.  We worked on the farmhouse, cleaned out the barn and outbuildings and bought seeds and plants that spring.  Our plans were to plant veggies and flowers but we had one problem----we didn't own a tractor. Our dilema was solved went we met some nice neighbors who came over and plowed our fields that first year.

We had a wonderful time that first summer on the farm.  It was a great growing season even though our old well didn't have much pressure for watering things.  Our small table under the birch tree was full of our harvest.  Regardless of the obstacles we had to work around, I think people really enjoyed driving by the farm and seeing what we were accomplishing.  In fact quite a few stopped to buy veggies or a bouquet of flowers and say they were glad to see the farm active again.  KEY:  Start small and work with what you have.  Read, study and search for information and you will get better at what you want to accomplish in life.
