Hi Monday shareholders,
I can't believe that I'm suggesting this -it's never happened in 13 years - but we might have to delay Monday evening's vegetable pickup until later in the week. The good news this season is that my very capable workers have been able to keep the weeds under control better than we ever have in the past. The bad news is that all that clean, bare ground sops up the water and turns to deep mud, and there are no weeds to walk on to keep us from sinking in. It is so soggy out here, it is barely possible to walk 10 steps in the garden, and I don't know how we will manage with buckets full of produce and 30 pounds of mud on each shoe. And my buddy Schnackenberger is practically guaranteeing rain all day tomorrow, Monday, and Tuesday.
So, I might have to delay your pickup. Perhaps we could have you come on Thursday night with the Thursday people if it dries out enough on Wed and Thur that we are able to do a double harvest. That's my best suggestion right now. I'll survey the gardens again tomorrow afternoon and will send the regular newsletter Sunday night. I'll also keep you posted during the day on Monday. If we have to skip a week, we can give you an additional pickup in September so you will still total 20 pickups over the course of the season.
If we are able to harvest Monday or later in the week, I think we will only be able to get the things that are above ground, like broccoli, cabbage, lettuce. Radishes, onions, and turnips might be more than we can handle. The snap peas should be ready to harvest this upcoming week, but it's possible that they will rot before then. Everyplace where they are touching the ground, they have started to decay. The potatoes, which were lovely about 36 hours ago, took a real beating and were knocked down three different times in three different directions. It will be interesting to see how they come out. Maybe some of the Colorado potato beetles got dislodged in all the action.
Hope you got through the storms without too much excitement. Get ready for another round, and I'll keep you posted as soon as I can figure out what we should do next. Let me know if you have any ideas.
See you sometime next week, maybe,
Laura
