Bluegrass Farmers Market

Nothing but 100% Homegrown or Produced at our market!
(Lexington, Kentucky)

Memorial Day Weekend at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

I can't think of a better way to start the Memorial Day weekend out than a trip to the Bluegrass Farmers' Market. Family, friends, cooking outdoors using all locally grown foods...it just doesn't get any better than that! Please take a moment out of your festivities to remember those who served so bravely in order for us to enjoy the freedom that we have. We thank them and their families for the sacrifices they have made. Fly a flag in their honor!

Now, what will you be able to find at the market on Saturday for that Memorial Day picnic table? Here's just a sampling of what will be available...

Strawberries

Rhubarb

Lettuce

Green onions

Green garlic

Asian greens

Kale

Swiss chard

Spinach

Tomatoes

Radishes

Asparagus

ASH free beef

Baked goods

Jams & jellies

Herb seasoning

Homemade soaps

Honey

Vegetable plants

Hanging herb baskets

Herb plants

Hanging flower baskets

Bedding plants

Tropical plants

And so much more!

Thought I would share a recipe from Local Harvest...sounds like a perfect Memorial Day pie to me!

Lena May's Rhubarb Custard Pie

Start by mixing up your favorite double crust pie pastry, or readying your favorite pre-made crust (just don't tell Lena May).

Then mix the following ingredients together and put in an unbaked pie shell.

  • 5 cups rhubarb, cut into 1" pieces or smaller

  • 1 cup sugar

  • 3 T. flour

  • 2 beaten eggs

Dot the top with butter. Put on the top pie crust, seal, and bake at 350 degrees for 45 -- 60 minutes. (Add 7 minutes for high altitude).

Have a wonderful holiday weekend and sure hope you spend some of it with us at the Bluegrass Farmer's Market!

It's Strawberry Tuesday at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

Tuesday's market will be loaded with farm fresh strawberries so you can create the perfect Memorial Day dessert! Slice them and add some whipped cream, make a strawberry shortcake or just eat them in all of their red perfection! Nothing says Happy Memorial Day better than strawberries!

Here's a few little known facts about this luscious fruit...

Strawberries are a member of the rose family and are not technically a berry!

Strawberries are the only fruit with the seeds on the outside and the average berry has over 200 of them!

Eight medium strawberries only have 45 calories!

They are packed with fiber and high in folate and phytonutrients that are sure to boost your general health!

It's even said that they can help improve your memory...we all need that! Lol

The best thing about a strawberry is that it is the first fruit to ripen in the spring...we all get to enjoy them fresh from our farms!

For a 100% homegrown/produced market we sure have a variety!!!

For a 100% homegrown/produced market we sure have a variety!!!

I was just looking over the list of items that will be at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market this Saturday and I went WOW! Our farmers and producers have sure outdone themselves this spring! Here's a sampling of what we'll have available on Saturday...

Ed will be bringing his pepper and canning tomato plants along with banana trees and giant elephant ear plants. And, where else in Kentucky can you find peanut plants? He's got them!

Keith is going to bring his Kentucky State Fair Championship honey!

Vicki will be unloading her truck full of herb hanging baskets, herb plants and assorted flowering plants!

Lauren is always a welcome sight with her ASH Free beef!!!

Our newest member, John, will have his farm fresh eggs, lettuce, green onions and even some red ripe tomatoes!!! He'll have green ones too so those of us who love fried green maters can enjoy them this week!

Jane has some surprises for the gardener who likes to dry their bounty...she'll be bringing coxcomb and gomphrena plants! She'll also have cut flowers, kale, Swiss chard, sugar snap peas and green onions!

Judi will be loaded down with her fabulous jams, asparagus and wonderful strawberries!

Linda always has her fantastic baked goods including zucchini chocolate cake! She also has fresh eggs, jams, pepper jellies and even a bean soup mix!

Roger will be set up if he has any heirloom tomato plants left...they went quickly this year! But, he'll be there to answer any questions even if he has no plants!

Karin and Drew will be driving their dear “Chuck” van once again and it will be loaded down with all of their herb seasoning blends, soaps and even some of those herb'n buns! They might even part with some of their Black Seeded Simpson lettuce, fresh cut Kentucky Colonel mint and Greek oregano!

Fran will arrive with her homemade soaps, fresh green onions and even some green garlic! Don't forget her sugar snap peas and herb plants!

Robert has really outdone himself this year in the Asian greens department! He'll be bringing freshly harvested Mizuma, Vitamin Green, Tokoyo Bekana, Bok Choy, Komatsuna and Yukina Savoy Asian greens!! He'll also have his wonderful asparagus, rhubarb, spinach and lettuce!

See what I mean? Our farmers have been busy and it sure shows! Heck, I don't think I even have the full list...there will probably be other farmers with plants and even more strawberries. Growing, weeding and harvesting takes many hours and trying to get in touch with each farmer before the blog goes out is almost impossible. Take my word for it...you'll get nothing but 100% homegrown or produced goodness at our market...we guarantee it!

We'd like to say thanks to Pedal the Planet and Fast signs for allowing us to “invade” their beautiful tree lined parking lot each week. They sure do help us make a farmers market that has easy access, free parking and probably the only wheelchair and stroller friendly one in the county!

So, got your shopping list ready? It's almost market time! :)

Strawberry time at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

The Tuesday market will be loaded with farm fresh strawberries!

I came home from the market on Saturday and made some freezer jam but I have to admit that I kept one in the fridge just so I could enjoy it with my Sunday morning breakfast!  It was wonderful and you can bet I'll be buying more this week!  Maybe you would prefer to let someone else make the jam for you...not to worry, there will be plenty available at the market!

If you are still searching for beautiful and useful plants, the Bluegrass Farmers' Market is the place to shop.  You'll find hanging herb baskets, herb plants, heirloom tomatoes, flowering plants and maybe even a peanut plant or two!

The Tuesday market is just now starting to kick off.  When you are a 100% homegrown market it takes a bit longer to get up to full swing.  So, please be patient and enjoy the homegrown goodness that our few farmers have to offer.

Hope you all get a chance to stop by and visit our Tuesday market...stay tuned for the Saturday market information.

Eggstraordinary Day at The Bluegrass Farmers' Market!

I love making up new words and “eggstraordinary” sure fits the market this Saturday! Our little market now has two farmers bringing eggs! That might not sound exciting to most folks, but when you are a 100% homegrown/produced farmers market it is quite thrilling to have a new member with a product that everyone loves. And, who can resist a farm fresh egg. There's nothing better except when you serve them with home baked bread and homemade jam! Geez, I forgot another “eggstraordinary” favorite...how about a fresh asparagus frittata with sliced spring strawberries on the side. Or maybe an herb seasoned omelet in a bag...something the kids love! Yup, eggs are a good thing and we'll have them Saturday at the market!

The sun is supposed to be shining for most of the weekend and we sure will welcome that after two weekends of rain and wind! It makes for a perfect time to think about grilling out. How about a juicy ASH Free hamburger, topped with spring onions and crisp lettuce, nestled in a home baked herb bun. Yum, I can taste it already and you haven't even started the grill! A little bird told me that we might even have the first local tomatoes of the year this week!!! There won't be many, so shop early.

So, what else will you be able to find this week at the market? How about some beautiful hanging herb baskets, tomato and pepper plants...even some heirlooms! Maybe a daylily or a giant elephant ear to add some color and excitement to your yard! Don't forget the hand blended herb seasoning or homemade soaps! And, who could forget the beautiful cut flowers and the wonderful honey! Heck, you'll even be able to find pepper jelly and zucchini breads and cakes with a bit of chocolate added to them!  How about this for great...I was just notified that one of our farmers will have bunches of Asian greens available!  And, sugar snap peas, green garlic and kale!  It just keeps  getting better.

For a small market, we sure do have a bunch to offer. And, the great part is...it's all grown, raised, baked or made by our farmers! We guarantee that and take pride in knowing that when our customers shop at our farmers market they get to meet the real farmer. We think that's what a farmers market is all about!

Bluegrass Farmers' Market Now Open on Tuesday Too!

Yup, that's right...the Bluegrass Farmers' Market is now open on Tuesday too! Hopefully Mother Nature will be a bit kinder than she was last Saturday. Our loyal farmers showed up in the pouring rain and so did our great customers. Thank you so much for your continued support even though many of you had to walk through “Lake Bluegrass” to reach us! If it ever happens again we can promise that there will be market ducks swimming in the lake just so we can all smile a little bit.

Okay, now for what you'll be able to find at the opening of the Tuesday market, it's going to be a plant lovers dream come true!

Tomato guy, Roger will be there was an assortment of heirloom tomato plants, Alpine strawberry plants, pepper plants and even some herb plants!

Ed, the banana tree fellow, will be bringing quite a mix of plants including...daylilies, hot pepper, canning tomato, various veggies, tropicals including giant elephant ears and of course...a few banana trees!

Our newest market member, Jonathon, is coming all the way from Maysville loaded down with hanging flower baskets, bedding plants, ferns, Wave petunias, mixed planters and tomato plants in containers and even hanging baskets for those of you who don't have a yard to plant in!

Like I said...it's gonna be the place for plant lovers to be on Tuesday! The great part is, they are all locally grown by our members so you can ask all sorts of questions about the planting and care of your purchase. They grew them so they know their plants!!!

Hope to see everyone at the opening of our Tuesday market! The hours are 3:00 until 6:30 and as always we will be set up in the beautiful tree lined parking lot of Fast Signs and Pedal the Planet next to the Glenn Auto Mall on Richmond Road just outside Man O War! There are rumors that we'll have a few new farmers this week too, so come out and give them a warm welcome. And, who knows what other farmers may show up!

Bigger Is Not Always Better!

Opening day was a pleasant surprise! We actually had 8 farmers loaded with goodies! That's a bunch considering we are a homegrown/producer market only!

We had a few customers stop by looking for tomatoes and corn and we had to explain to them that they are not in season in Kentucky and unless they were grown in a greenhouse or hydroponically, you won't find any local tomatoes, green beans or corn at a local farmers market! Chances are they came from Texas or somewhere outside of the United States! Not exactly local, needless to say!

Which brings me back to bigger is not always better. Yes, there is a much bigger market in the same town and they do have some really great growers and producers. But, do you really know who they are and what they actually grow? Just because they have a sign up that tells you where they claim to farm, does not mean that they really grew the items available. Not knocking the other market because it is truly a neat place to visit but if you are seriously looking for local homegrown or produced products the Bluegrass Farmers' Market is the only one that can guarantee that's what you'll be getting!

We're small and we're 100% grown or produced by the farmer! We do not allow our members to subsidize their booth with out-of-season products to “hold them over” until their crops come in. It was a decision that we made when we organized our market because we knew that some folks really wanted to support local growers. Did it mean that we don't make quite as much money...YES! Because we don't have the extra added attractions like the out of season peppers, tomatoes and corn. Did it make us want to change our mind...NO! We felt that local supporters deserved to have a place to shop where they know that at each booth you'll find the real grower or producer. It wasn't a hard decision even though our pocketbooks might not be as full. We value our customers and our thoughts that a farmer should get his hands dirty in the soil and not at an auction handing over money to purchase items to resell.

So for us, YES, small is better when it comes to the choice between local homegrown and “it's a way to make money!” And, to those who truly support locally homegrown or produced items..we thank you.

Opening Day Is Here!

The 2010 Bluegrass Farmers' Market season opens this Saturday and we're thrilled to be back! Fast Signs and Pedal the Planet have once again decided that we are welcome in their beautiful tree lined parking lot and we thank them so much. It's so convenient for our farmers and our customers. The farmers can just pull in and the customers don't have to pay to park or walk very far. It doesn't get better than that...except for the fact that everything you find at our market was either grown, baked, raised or made by the actual farmer. That means you are guaranteed that you are buying local and not something from a terminal or auction like the grocery stores.

There is a downside to be being homegrown only. It means that you won't find corn, tomatoes or green beans yet...they are not in season in Kentucky. What you will find is homegrown freshness!

Here's a bit of what you will find on opening day...

Judy will be bringing her wonderful homemade jams and fresh spring asparagus

Vicki will be bringing her beautiful plants including some herb baskets

Lauren and Brandon will be bringing their fabulous ASH free beef

Karin and Drew will be set up with a full selection of their herb seasoning and homemade soaps

Roger will not have any tomatoes yet, but he sure will have information and orders forms for purchasing plants to grow in your own garden

And, a little bird told us that we will see gorgeous spring bouquets of lilacs and some other surprises too!  Like lettuce!!!

We're so excited and hope you all come join us on opening day, Saturday April 17th! We'll be there with smiles on our faces and wonderful goodies for you to enjoy.

Exciting 2010 Season Ahead!

We had our annual meeting and it was so exciting to hear about what our farmers will be growing to bring to the market this year. We've been listening to our customers and that's what makes our farmers market so great.

For example, our farmer known for his banana trees and lily plants decided to utilize some of his farm to grow garlic this year! What a wonderful welcome to the Bluegrass Farmers' Market...fresh garlic! The herb seasoning folks are branching out a bit and trying their hand at growing a mini Bok Choy! And, from what I heard, there will be more of a variety of lettuces available this spring! The tomato guy is so excited about his heirloom plant selection for this year. And, I heard about all sorts of new selections that will be available in the bread and jam department! I love that one. :) Plus we had some new farmers interested in joining our market so who knows what they will bring...this should be a very exciting year for us!

By the way, we did decide to open a week earlier this year because we found that there would be enough participation to warrant it. Look for us on April 17th!

Homegrown and produced goodness is just around the corner, now if we can only get through the winter snow! lol

Bad News and Good News!

Bad news...Our annual meeting was postponed due to the snow we had in Lexington last weekend.

Good news...That means we still have time to get some input from our customers!

So, tell us what you would like to see at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market  next season!

Even with all of our homegrown goodness, our farmers would like to know if we are missing out on something.  Maybe a pepper, tomato, specific type of potato or even something totally unique.  We'd love to hear from you so we can discuss the possibiltiy of offering more or different items at our market next year.

Our goal...to become the very best market in Lexington!  We already know that we are the only 100% homegrown/produced one but we also want everyone to know that we are not affilated with the other market that allows reselling.

It's not going to be easy because the "other" market has been around for years and while it started out as a "true" farmers market, things have changed.  That's the reason we started the Bluegrass Farmers' Market.  We wanted to offer customers nothing but locally grown or produced items!  And, each one of our member farmers must be certified Kentucky Proud...we don't do a group thing.

You'll find many familiar famers at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market because they wanted a market that was truly for the farmers and producers in Kentucky!

So, tell us what you want to see at the Bluegrass Farmers' Market before our meeting on February 13th!

Last Day of the 2009 Market Season!

Well, it's bittersweet but the 2009 season for the Bluegrass Farmers' Market comes to an end this Saturday. It means that our farmers get to start planning for next year, which is always exciting. But, it also means that we don't get to see our customers for a few months over the winter and that is always sad. Just because you won't see us each week, doesn't mean that we are not thinking about you. In fact, we spend many hours deciding what to grow next year and a bunch of that has to do with the feedback that we heard from you this season. If there is something that you'd like to see at our market next year, please let us know soon because we can sure pass it on to our farmers. Just reply to this blog and I'll make sure that it gets passed on. Remember...we grow for you!

But wait!!!! We still have one more market day to go and there's still plenty of goodies available!

Look for plenty of crisp apples, winter squash, sweet potatoes, a variety of white and red potatoes, peppers and even some homegrown tomatoes! Be sure to ask a farmer about winter storage..you'd be surprised at how long some things will last if stored properly!

Of course, the cooler weather doesn't stop our members from making their wonderful jams, jellies and butters. Think gift giving!!!! Or, how about including a jar of bean soup mix in that gift basket! And, there are always those wonderful home baked breads and cakes. Football season is still here and that means tailgating so how about some great beer cheese!

Before we say our goodbye's for the season we would like to thank all of our very supportive customers for making our 2009 season a wonderful one. We hope that you all know how much we have appreciated you this year. You've helped us grow in membership and that can only mean that we will be bigger next year! A totally homegrown/produced market is not an easy task to start...it takes customers who support the homegrown goodness to keep farmers coming back each week and you have certainly proved that we are wanted!!! Waking up before the sun comes up so that we can harvest our offerings is so much nicer when we know that we'll see the smiles on our customers faces as we stand there in the heat, rain and cold weather at the market. You make our day and you help keep us down on our farms which is where we want to be!

Our thanks to all of you many times over!

The 2009 Market Season Is Quickly Coming To A Close!

Granted, it is supposed to be damp and on the chilly side this Saturday but that won't stop our farmers from showing up with all of their homegrown goodness!

I am amazed at the amount of tomatoes, peppers, zucchini and green beans still available. And, don't forget the wonderful winter squash, potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnips, kale and apples. Yup, it's homegrown goodness at its best!

The Bluegrass Farmers' Market also allows members to sell items that they have produced themselves. That means no store bought and repackaged stuff at our market! We have members who make their own beer cheese, hand blend herb seasoning, create mixed dry beans for soup, bake wonderful breads and cookies, make homemade soaps and even gather and mix goodies for potpourri! And, who can forget the wonderful jams, jellies and butters...some sweet and some spicy!

We only have two more weeks of our 2009 market season so stop by and say hi before we close for the year.
