It's been a long winter with bunches of snow and rain. The good part is, the rain could have been snow! EEK! By now, we are hoping everyone is snow free and the flooding has subsided. It's been rough for our area...the great news...we survived!!! And, the extra great news is that the vernal equinox, or spring as we call it, has arrived! That can only mean that the extra, extra great news is about to follow...the Bluegrass Farmers' Market is ready to open its 2105 market season! Whew, can you tell I am excited by the use of the extra exclamation marks? lol We are all excited and are welcoming spring with open arms.
Most folks don't realize that our members work all winter too. Not only do we have to raise our herds and tend our chickens, we have to decide what seeds to order, prepare the fields for planting, start seedlings in our hoop houses, make sure our equipment is ready for the spring thaw and then we get to rest...for two minutes because we have to start thinking about all of the paperwork involved in selling at a farmers market. No, we don't just “join” a market and start selling because there are many county, state and federal rules and regulations that our farmers must meet each year. Each member of the Bluegrass Farmers' Market has to meet our criteria of being 100% homegrown, raised, baked or made by the actual member. They have to be certified Kentucky Proud or Appalachian Proud. They have to receive a certificate for attending a GAP (Good Agricultural Practices) if they sell any fruits or vegetables. And, they have to be inspected by our membership committee to guarantee that our members are bringing only the best to our market.
I guess you are wondering why I am going on about this...the answer is simple. We want our customers to know that we just don't go to an auction house and buy stuff to resell...we love what we do and we are proud of it and we want you to know that too!
Okay, now to the very best part of this long winded blog...our Azur Restaurant & Patio location is opening tomorrow!!! Yup, Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 9 AM and we'll be there until 2 PM! The folks at Azur have warmly invited us back for a second season and we decided to take advantage of the holiday season and offer our customers the opportunity to purchase Easter and Passover lamb, baked goods, honey and even treats for your four-legged friends! Granted, this will be limited market participation but it is your chance to shop truly local...guaranteed! More great goodies to follow, I promise.
One more thing to mention, our other market location...we're still working on securing the perfect, permanent site and it has been a bunch of hard work for our site committee and board of directors. They are working hard to secure a new location before our April 18th opening. I promise that we will have some news for everyone soon.
So, what farmers will you find at tomorrow's market? Here's a short list and who knows, there might be more! :)
STONE BURR FARM will be bringing their wonderful lamb, all cuts including sausage!
SUMMER STARTS HERE FARM will have muffins, bread, honey and pet treats!
HOKHMAH FARM AQUAPONICS will also be there!
Sorry for being so “mouthy” but I wanted to make sure that everyone knew what happens over the winter,
Karin, Your friendly blog gal
