Start of the new hatching season!

Well on Tuesday, January 4th, 2 Silver Appleyard ducklings hatched. Then on Thursday, Janurary 6, our Pekin hen died in my arms. Very sad.

Our next eggs in the incubator will be Buff Orpington and Australorp chickens. I will post when the expected hatch date is for anyone interested in chicks.

For anyone interested in hatching out their own chicks, we will start the incubation process in Janurary. I will post on my blog, which breed I'm doing at a particular time. Anyone interested in hatching eggs or buying chicks let me know. I can ship eggs, anywhere in the US but the chicks have to be picked up at my house. If you are interested in buying pullets of a particular breed, let me know in advance so I can set enough eggs.

4H Show

Well fall is here and the leaves keep filling up the chicken's water tubs! Most of our chickens we raised this season look great. Although, I'm upset that my golden-laced Wyandotte rooster does not have the proper comb. He looks like the standard in all other points, except for his comb.

We were at the Laurita Winery a few weeks ago, had a great turnout. The public was very interested in what our family was doing with our chickens and bought a lot of eggs. Hopefully, we will get some new repeat customers out of the event.

Our family is going to the Hunterdon County 4H poultry show on November 20th. We are showing some of our chickens, hanging out with other chickens people is always a good time.

My daughter is in 4H and has been showing her chickens at a few fairs this summer. We went to Stars and Stripes, the Mercer County 4H Fair and Salem County Fair. She won Best in Show out of 61 birds with her Dominque pullet! She received the Fair Ambassdor Award at the Mercer County Fair. This has been a great summer for shows.

Chicken camp raided by fat fox!

We had to build outside runs for our chickens. So our laying hens are no longer truly free range. I'm very bummed about this sitution. I love watching them scratching around in the leaves looking for bugs and worms. Last weekend we were at the farm working, so we decided to let the "girls and boys" out for the day. Well, we left to retrieve a forgotten item at another location, we were only gone for about 15 minutes. As were driving back to where the chickens are housed we saw a big, fat fox! It must of have been waiting in the bushes for us to leave. He killed one our Americana hens but didn't get away with her. So we tried our hand for the first time at butchering, by reading a book and wielding the knife. The next night we had fresh chicken for dinner. She was pretty tasty considering she was 3 years old! The fox probably has killed 3 of our roosters and at least 5 hens. So now I'm on the constant quest for fresh green stuff to throw in their outside areas.

21 new red heads!

We had 21 chicks hatch Friday and Saturday. 14 eggs didn't hatch, still a great number did. Best hatch we have had yet! We will have lots of Brown eggs this winter. We are saving Rhode Island eggs for another incubator full. Hopefully the next hatch will be as good.
