Home Farm Herbery Organic Ashwagandha Seeds are a herbaceous perennial in the tropics, annual in temperate zones. Start indoors and transplant as you would tomatoes. It does not tolerate cold conditions well. Ginseng-like Ayurvedic tonic is used mainly for physical and mental exhaustion.Plant 12 inches apart in full sun and it grows from 24 to 36 inches in height and 9 to 12 inches in diameter producing eventually the lantern-like pods enclosing the pea-sized fruits, green at first and becoming bright red as the inflated calyx dries and becomes transparent.  This plant produces pretty little winter cherries.Hardiness to 15 degrees.Cooler than zone 8, Ashwagandha is best grown as a summer annual or it grows well in a pot.If grown in a cooler climate we advise getting an early start, as the plant really requires a 200 day growing season to reach full maturity.  Plants grown for 100 days still produce fine roots for medicinal use, but the yield is less. Sow in early spring indoors or in the greenhouse.  Average germ time 15 days.

Easy to grow, unusual and useful, also an increasingly popular herb for selling and taking. Dried root is a Ginseng-like tonic of Ayurveda. Traditionally used as a sedative, aphrodisiac, anti-diabetic and general tonic, the anabolic activity of the herb is particularly well suited for treating those who are depleted of energy and lack sexual appetite.  The herb builds energy and jing.  Having trouble getting the old engine to turn over?  Need something to help grease the crank?  Try taking 1 gram of Ashwagandha powder in milk or ghee, morning and night.  Your partner will be impressed.
