Spinella Farm

Life on a 100-year-old market farm
(Waterford Works, New Jersey)

Thoughts for Tuesday, May 6, 2014

The harbinger of spring is the asparagus. While many people may not think of the asparagus as appetizing, it does have body cleansing properties and was used by the Lenni Lenape as such. Asparagus is one of the wild plants that you can still find growing in South Jersey that man has cultivated to suit his needs. It can be a fickle plant to grow, taking up to three years before it can yield a harvest worth noting. It can be susceptible to a disease known as rust and if you harvest it too late in the season, you can damage the plant for next year and get little or nothing out of it. Amazingly, none of these things don't happen to the wild plant. Some times we can breed all of the good out of something and while getting one characteristic while losing the quality of another. Gee, sorta sounds like one of those pharmaceutical commercials doesn't it?
