Farm Direct Minnesota

Farm Direct Minnesota began on May 5, 2020, during a time when grocery store shelves were empty, food supply chains were struggling, and many Minnesota families were searching for another way to purchase meat, eggs, produce, and other everyday foods.

At the same time, farmers across the state had food available—but many consumers did not know how to find them.

I created Farm Direct Minnesota to help close that gap.

What began as a simple effort to connect Minnesota farmers directly with consumers has grown into a statewide local food resource, an interactive farm directory map, and an online community of more than 117,000 people who want to support Minnesota agriculture.

Helping Consumers Find Minnesota Farms

Minnesota has an incredible variety of farms, producers, farmers markets, farm stands, cottage food businesses, processors, and locally made products. The challenge is that many of these businesses can be difficult to discover unless someone already knows their name or happens to live nearby.

Farm Direct Minnesota was created to make that search easier.

The Farm Direct Minnesota Directory Map allows people to search for local food and farm products by:

ZIP code and distance

Shoppers can look for grass-fed beef, grain-finished beef, bulk beef shares, pork, poultry, eggs, raw milk information, produce, honey, maple syrup, grains, cottage foods, handmade goods, farmers markets, farm stands, CSAs, U-pick farms, processors, and many other Minnesota-grown or locally produced items.

The map is updated throughout the year as new farms and producers join or existing listings change.

More Than Just a Map

Farm Direct Minnesota is not simply a list of farm names.

Each participating farm or producer can share information about what they offer, where they are located, how customers can contact them, and where people can learn more about their business.

The goal is to help consumers move from asking, “Where can I find this?” to directly contacting a Minnesota farmer or producer.

Thousands of people use the directory to look for food and farm products. The Farm Direct Minnesota Facebook community also gives farmers, producers, markets, and local food supporters a place to share seasonal availability, farm updates, upcoming markets, and new products.

This is especially valuable for smaller farms that may not have a large advertising budget or a full marketing team behind them.

Supporting the People Behind Minnesota Food

Behind every package of beef, carton of eggs, jar of honey, loaf of bread, bag of flour, bunch of vegetables, or locally made product is a real person or family doing the work.

Farmers and producers are managing livestock, planting crops, harvesting food, processing products, attending markets, answering customer questions, maintaining websites and social media pages, and trying to keep their businesses visible.

Farm Direct Minnesota helps bring those individual efforts together in one searchable place.

The platform has been independently built and maintained without state funding or government grants. It has grown through years of outreach, research, website development, farmer participation, consumer support, and a shared belief that local food should be easier to find.

Why Buying Direct Matters

Buying directly from a farm gives consumers an opportunity to learn more about where their food comes from and how it was produced.

It also keeps more food dollars within local communities.

Direct farm relationships can help shoppers discover:

Many farms are also private homes and working agricultural properties.

Hours, product availability, pickup procedures, and payment options may change throughout the season. Some farms welcome visitors during posted hours, while others require an appointment or arrange pickup at another location.

Always contact the farm directly before visiting.

This gives the farmer an opportunity to confirm availability and provide any instructions you may need.

Farm Direct Minnesota continues to grow as more people look for ways to purchase food closer to home and support the farmers and producers around them.

My goal remains the same as it was when I started in 2020: make it easier for Minnesota consumers to find local food and make it easier for Minnesota farmers and producers to be found.
