Josh and Rebekah May are the owners and operators of Sunny Day Organic Farms. Both are native Nevadans, Josh being a long time resident of Dayton, and Rebekah being a long term resident of North Reno. They married in the summer of 2006 and purchased their property in Stagecoach, Nevada in November of 2006.
Their first dairy goats came in 2008 when they decided that they wanted to be able to continue consuming dairy, but did not want to support all of the extra nastiness (the animals poor quality of life, the antibiotics, the hormones, the pasteurization, the industry etc.). Soon thereafter, they decided that they would no longer eat meat if was not humanely and sustainably grown. A little hunting resulted in them discovering a good, local and sustainable source for beef, lamb and chicken, but they were unable to find a good source for pork. Two hogs were purchased as wieners and raised up for slaughter. These young farmers went to the slaughterhouse for the processing of their first piggies to see what the process looked like from start to finish. They knew that they had a commodity product when, during the break down of their pigs, the butcher told them that their two hogs were the best looking that he had seen in years. The next year they had a few requests from friends and family to be able to purchase their pork.
It has been four years since they started tending to their first animals and now raise approximately ten pigs each year for food lovers and local restaurants such as Adele's, 4th St. Bistro, and Campo. They also keep dairy goats, chickens, pigs, dogs, cats, and kids and grow produce for their own family.
The May family has been helping out at our Custom Gardens Organic Farm in Silver Springs, NV., for a few years. Produce trimmings (certified organic) from our farm goes to their farm in the summer-fall months.... [more]
