Hens in Harmony Homestead

Hens in Harmony Homestead is a small family-owned business in Pekin, IL that sells pastured eggs, baby chicks, juvenile female chickens, and laying hens. We currently have young laying hens for sale: Plymouth Barred Rock and Americauna! These girls are ready for their forever homes. We accept cash and Venmo!

We have recently expanded our business and changed our name from Local & Fresh Farm Stand to Hens in Harmony Homestead! We do not have baby chicks for sale at this time. We do have fresh eggs for sale again! You can reserve your eggs ahead of time or stop by day or night on your schedule and shop from our egg fridges! When reserving, please confirm the quantity of cartons you'd like as a one-time pick up or to reserve pick up for each week! We will still have eggs for sale on our porch begin sold as first come, first serve as well!

We aim to provide fresh food to our community and a great life for our chickens. We raise our chickens from day old chicks, so we know they've been cared for well throughout their entire life. We vaccinate our girls for Marek's Disease to help ensure they will be healthy wherever they go! We love to sell our hand raised chicks and juvenile pullets (female chickens) to fellow farmers and backyard flock keepers! We sell chickens nearly year-round, from February to November each year. Be sure to check back frequently to see what new breeds we have available!

Our family started out owning 3 chickens to get fresh eggs daily. It wasn't long before our family started to grow in numbers and our flock began to expand as well. Diving in as new chicken owners, we were abruptly made aware of the difference in egg taste and quality when hens are fed layer feed versus hens that are allowed to eat their natural diet of grass, plants, insects, and worms. We also learned about the mistreatment of chickens living in large egg production "farms" where they may never see real daylight or real grass in their entire lives! Sadly, that is just the tamest of the mistreatment production hens endure in order for businesses to pump out mediocre eggs and sell them to our local grocery stores.

As we have transitioned to being a larger family, our viewpoints of the egg and chicken industry have also transformed. No longer do we want to support those that hurt chickens to take their precious eggs. While we may just be a blooming small business, we take pride in providing an enriched, natural environment for our hens to help them live as healthy and happy as they can be. We want them to live their best chicken life! We also want fresh, nutritious eggs to eat and provide to our community.

While we are an urban farm, these eggs are pasture raised. Our hens have lots of area to roam and forage from dawn to dusk. They eat fresh vegetable scraps in addition to their daily buffet of grass, seeds, plants, insects, and home raised mealworms. They are offered high quality layer feed and crushed eggshell as well. We don't feed our hens corn but continuously sprout lentils and grains for them to ensure as an additional treat.

We will soon again have our fresh brown, blue, and olive colored eggs available daily. We will soon be back to selling both unwashed and washed, fresh eggs with bright and creamy yolks!

We have temperature controlled mini fridges to hold our fresh eggs until customers pick them up. One mini fridge holds our unwashed eggs at 67 degrees so they can retain that wonderful bloom. With the bloom, the eggs are able to be kept out on the counter without needing refrigeration. The other mini fridge holds our washed eggs at 38 degrees. Washed eggs lose their bloom and must stay refrigerated. Anyone is welcome to come and purchase eggs from our front porch. We love regulars and can take large orders and reservations for pick up. Fresh eggs are stocked daily every day! We are back to selling fresh eggs daily and have increased our flock size to accommodate even more customers this year!
