Emmons Homestead originated from the belief that the increase in health issues in our country is caused largely by the chemicals in our food. We began with the desire to provide healthier food for our families, and now have an opportunity to provide that same quality product for you and your family. The pork from our farm is "Free Range", meaning the pigs (and they are some happy pigs!) live outside on 20 wooded acres, only coming inside their shelters when they choose to. They eat lots of what nature provides (acorns, plants, grubs, veggie snacks from the kitchen...). A local Amish feed store mixes up our non-GMO feed, and the bulk of the ingredients are grown by other local Amish farmers. If anyone knows how to farm sustainably and without chemicals, it's the Amish farmers. Hormones and Antibiotics are also a normal part of the diet of factory farmed livestock. Of course, when we eat that commercial meat, we are ingesting the chemicals that the animal ingested. Studies are showing that those chemicals are causing ill effects on our health, so our pigs are raised naturally, without hormones or antibiotics. It takes more work and pre-planning to raise livestock naturally, but we believe that's the only way it should be done. Our pork is processed at a local packing plant, and they are treated kindly and humanely at all times. The meat is packed in vacuum sealed packaging that keeps the meat fresh for a LONG time. You can be sure that when you serve meat from Emmons Homestead, you're serving food that's as pure as nature intended....and, that's why we do this.
