Here at Legend Rock, we offer dressed turkeys as well as newly hatched Narragansett turkey poults and juvenile turkeys; either single males or breeding pairs.. Since we incubate and hatch eggs from our own flock, the turkeys are acclimated to the local weather and altitude, resulting in very hardy stock. We do not vaccinate or use antibiotics except as needed to treat injuries. We do not de-beak the turkeys or alter them in any manner.
We raise three breeds of chickens here at Legend Rock. For egg production, the non-industrial (Heritage) Rhode Island Red has proved to be a hardy and reliable layer, producing 275 to 300 eggs a year. These birds are becoming rare as the breed is slowly 'improved' to meet the needs of the factory farms. For meat production, we selected the 'Red Ranger' and the 'White Orpington'. Both are excellent foragers, hardy and easily withstand the rigors of a natural environment. Most chickens raised for meat are the fast-growing Cornish variety that are veritable eating machines. Unless fed in limited amounts, these creations of 'modern' breeding techniques will quite literally eat themselves to death.
