Hunter's Playground is an off-grid small farm and homestead in it's beginning phases just north of the village of Westport on California's north coast. Established in 2013, it was our desire to live and work in the place that we loved. With an interest in a wide variety of sustainable practices, and a disillusionment with the life we were leading in the bay area, we quit our former lives and set out with our young son, Hunter, to do something different. Much of our time since then has been spent nurturing and rehabilitating our land for sustainable food production. Progress has been slow, by design, but we are pleased with where we are going.
Our first endeavor was a laying flock of Bragg's Mountain Buff hens. We began selling eggs to friends and neighbors at the beginning of 2014 and were met with such a positive response we expanded our flock. Our girls spend their days outside foraging for much of their food and lay beautiful eggs that mostly fall in the extra large to jumbo range. We also have a small flock of Toulouse geese whom we mostly keep for the positive effect they have on the land and a flock of Bourbon Red turkeys that we hope to expand and continue breeding. Our animals don't just provide us and our neighbors food, but are also an integral part of our system of farming: eating bugs, spreading fertilizer, turning over the soil, and overall skewing the flora toward more desirable plants and flowers than what would come up wild without their help.
Though we had always enjoyed visiting the area we eventually moved to, and had talked for years about making the move up here, it was the birth of our son in 2011 that gave us the final push toward making such a life changing decision. We wanted him to grow up in close connection to his food and the land it came from. Since he was our inspiration, and all the food we grow we grow with him in mind, we decided to name our farm Hunter's Playground. It is his place to explore, play, be a part of, and, of course, grow and eat food.
