Our poultry (chickens and turkeys) are pasture raised under the big open sky. These birds are true free-range, no mobile chicken cages, they run free all day. They enjoy sunshine, fresh air, and fresh grass every day! They feast on bugs, comfrey, fresh veggies, fallen fruit and berries. This gives them a unique flavor only available on our agroforestry farm. With plenty of space to run around, this chicken tastes like REAL chicken, not bland like the confined fat chickens at the store.
Our heritage Kune Kune pigs are great milk and whey eaters, they like to eat grass and hay instead of grains. The pigs are fed organic whey from Crushpad Creamery and any extra milk that we have on the farm, plus foraging for acorns and dropped fruit in our orchard in the fall. They are all organically fed, they get excess veggies from some local farms and all the organic veg trimmings from our commercial kitchen. Their meat is a little darker than conventional pigs and the fat is incredibly delicious and satiating; it is one of the top rated pork meats for chefs, along with the highly prized Mangalitsa pig.
The goats are born in early spring and spend their 4-6 months with their mom growing up on milk and then are switched to a separate pasture where they are raised to just under a year old. These animals are very healthy and happy. Organically fed, no grain or medications, just grass and brush. Goat meat is one of the healthiest meats available. Incredibly nutritionally dense and very lean. I usually compare it to buffalo meat or elk. Buying straight from the farmer is a great way to get the freshest meat and the best price possible.
Goats thrive when they are foraging on forest, so we have been transitioning our pasture to silvopasture (adding forage trees in rather than just grass), we also take our goats on regular walks thru the forest around our farm. They feast on oak, madrone, manzanita, oregon grape, poison oak.... this all adds to the delicious and distinct sweet flavor of the meat. However, it is still necessary to provide supplemental feed for the animals at night when they are safely secured in the barn. We source all our feed locally from Oregon farmers we trust and many who are certified Organic. Although our farm is not certified Organic currently, we are committed to using Organic feed first and foremost and also supporting our neighbors who use Organic standards yet are not certified. We also care for our animals using holistic medicine.
