Leaping Waters Farm is owned and run by Sarah and Alec Bradford and our four children, Aidan, Sophie, Tallulah and Sadie. We raise heritage breed animals on our farm in Shawsville, Virginia. Heritage breed refers to purebred lines of older breeds which thrive on certain characteristics that are not inherent in modern, commercial animals. All of our cattle are pasture raised and grass finished. There are no antibiotics or hormones given to the animals, we raise non-GMO corn for the pigs to finish on as well as forage turnips and rye (the small grain). Our animals are all given ample pasture and all are Animal Welfare Approved.
Our cattle are of the venerable breed of Ancient White Park. As the name implies they an ancient breed, indeed only 1700 breeding cows exist worldwide. They are traditionally the private animals of the British royal family. In 1939 they were exported to Canada to preserve the breed in the coming war. They moved from Toronto to New York and then Texas before finding permanent homes in Iowa, Montana and Virginia. We currently have the third largest herd on the planet. As with all British breeds their beef is of superior quality.
The pigs we raise are Large Blacks, Berkshires, Red Wattles and Landrace. They are all raised outdoors and in a friendly environment, so much so that the piglets and sows come calling to us every morning whether beckoned or not.
The turkeys and geese are heritage animals as well, and they are given ample access to fresh feed daily. We have five varieties of turkey and six of geese. They are available as whole birds only seasonally.
