Holy Cow Foods is a multi-dimensional, family -owned, organic food business started in 1990 with the simple objective of promoting sustainable agricultural practices--which we define as local and organic. To this end we have created products which are sold in stores, catered events large and small, and opened an all organic vegetarian cafe on the University of Oregon campus. The Holy Cow Cafe began in 1997 determined to serve all local produce. As luck would have it we were slightly ahead of our time, and were unable to find enough local produce to supply demand during the months when the University is opened. Over the years we created a network with just about every local farmer in the area, together with OrganicallyGrownCompany's greater ability to pull produce from where it grows during the winter. We have contracted with local farmers to grow crops for us, and now are proud to be helping two of our former employees to launch their farms with secured orders from us. We seek to deepen our support for our local farming community with our purchases. Our cafe is the first organic cafe anywhere on a college campus. We are proud to be available at the U of O as an example of what food should be: made mostly from vegetables, freshly acquired, lightly processed. We serve food from around the world including pasta dishes, Indian food, tofu and tempeh made from a local producer- Surata, veggies and grain dishes, and a complete organic salad bar featuring as many local items as available. Our rotating soup selections take advantage of local produce at its height, putting it away for "winter". In addition to our fresh hot foods, soup and salad bar, we offer a selection of organic fruit, beverages, baked goods, and grab and go items from local and/or organic products. There are simply too many to name individually, but we are committed to selling locally made products and are constantly seeking out new ones to add to our selection. We serve fair trade coffee, make our own chai and punches....and make dynamite bread and tortillas in addition to our baked goods. If you're on campus, we're a no-brainer. For those who cannot make the shlep onto campus....well...you'll have to wait until we open our next one in town...someday soon.... In the meantime, our finest calling is our catering, which can come to you! This is where we really get to use the best of what's local. Fortunately, many people in the Northwest celebrate in the sunnier months, when the farming is greater. Our events are not to be believed and are only as simple as you want to make them. But we always start with what will be available fresh at market. Check out our website for more details on all our goings-on. Upcoming Events

Sick of green-wash?

People who point out the couple of items that appear green? Like: who recycle (& there is infrastructure in their town to do so).

We're the kind of company that jumps the cow before the cart. Like: We compost the organic scraps we create, before there was infrastructure to do so (& with the synergy of helping the NW Youth Corps, too). We introduced durable wares into a throw way culture of a food mall, no infrastructure. We keep pushing the edge, changing things bit by bit.
