Welcome to Jhawk Farm, our home on the range. My name is Garoleen Wilson. My husband Joe and I are Smith County Kansas natives. In addition to pastured poultry We run small herd of beef cattle on about 400 acres of pasture and produce hay and grain on about 700 hundred acres in addition to owning a fiberglass manufacturing business. A bit of trivia - The famous folk song "Home on the Range" was written in a log cabin near Athol, Kansas in Smith County and the cabin still stands today. I was an extra in the documentary movie "Home on the Range".
Joe and I were both farm kids and high school sweethearts. Both helped parents and grandparents butcher chickens when we were kids. We married and raised their our two daughters as farm kids as well.
Since we married in 1982 we have always had animals of all kinds Show dogs, hunting dogs, hogs, horses, goats and cattle. We have always kept chickens, mostly laying hens for eggs. The first responsibilities of our young daughters included feeding chickens and gathering eggs.
A few years ago, I was diagnosed with uterine cancer. After a hysterectomy I was deemed Cancer free. That was a turning point in my life. I now believe that cancer and many other diseases are based on our unhealthy lifestyle which is chock full of over processed food and chemicals in our homes and food.
In 2016 I discovered two podcasts about pastured poultry. I binge listened to every available episode. Being an animal person this concept appealed to me. Raising animals and birds in a way as close to nature as possible really made sense. People are a product of the food we eat. The animals that provide our meat are also a product of what they eat.
When we embarked on raising pastured poultry we chose chicken feed rations formulated by Fertell using non-GMO corn and wheat that we grow on our farm. The ingredients not grown on our farm like roasted soybeans are sourced as locally as possible. We choose to use fresh whole grains that Joe processes on farm rather than less expensive by-products like soybean meal or distillers products. It's our choice to use the best feed not the least expensive so that we can enjoy the type of meat that we want available for our grandchildren. We know that people that don't have the option to raise their own pastured poultry will like to enjoy our Jhawk Farm chicken and beef.
