Jimmy Luffa came about as an offshoot of backyard gardening, growing unusual plants and the pandemic.
I grew my first batch of luffa, apple, smooth and snake luffa.
That year as I started harvesting the luffa to make sponges, I had an idea and began offering the dried, whole luffa for sale to people with children at home, due to the school closures.
The idea being that they could experience peeling them, making a sponge, harvesting the seeds and growing their own come spring.
I put posts on the Neighborhood app and Facebook. I sold quite a few and people were excited to learn and share the story of a luffa sponge.
I then began selling the luffa online to people that wanted for their use and for crafts, like soap making.
The seeds became another popular item. People wanted seed all around the world.
My apple luffa, by the second and third year, had morphed into a soccer ball size I call F2 and then in turn grew the size of a football and I called these F3.
People were very interested in a Virginia grown luffa and the ones that I named Virginia Huskies.
I've shipped seeds within the USA, Canada, France and Estonia.
I'm looking forward to what the F4 seeds become as they grow in various locations.
Another product I'm hoping for is Luffa water. The liquid derived from the luffa and it's vine are said to be great for skin.
I'm not done experimenting and seeing how many products I can come up with and what my customers will create with my Virginia Huskies.
