La Colina Linda (LCL) Farm and B&B is in Union County, in the greater Cobden area amidst orchards, vineyards and wineries. The one-acre farm consists of sustainably grown vegetable, herb and flower beds; a fruit-nut permaculture food forest; and, a two-bedroom/two-bath cottage. The food forest includes fruit trees, fruit brambles, and medicinal and native plants. We use certified organic seeds and plants, holistic orchard practices, chemical-free methods, bio-intensive double-dug beds, crop rotations, row covers, compost (farm generated,vermi-compost), mulch, and fungal networks. In 2014, LCL is pursuing organic certification.
LCL Farm's primary crops---all holistically grown---are edamame (organic non-GMO green soy beans), hard and soft garlic, tomatillos, chiles, blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and strawberries. Other crops may include potatoes, cut flowers, squash and melons. We grow kitchen garden fruits and vegetables for use in the B&B, farm-to-table vegan gluten-free meals, and cooking classes.
We provide learning experiences for youth and adults. Interns acquire knowledge and skills in developing permaculture, creating raised beds and intensively farming fruits, nuts, vegetables, herbs, and flowers by doing hands-on work on the farm. Co-farmers, Kathy Ward and Jeri Kinser, provide instruction and guidance for young people and adults interested in organic farming practices that improve the soil and benefit the environment. In 2013, Jeri and Kathy completed Farm Beginnings, sponsored by Food Works.
