Our guiding principal at Laura Lake Farms is that Happy Hogs are healthy hogs. We continually strive to create an environment which reduces stress, encourages instinctive behaviors, and allows for individual preference.
All hogs have access to a full feed ration year round. This ration is all that modern animal nutritionists say is needed to raise a healthy hog. Our process goes a step further when seasonally possible. Seasonal vegetables and fruits grown in our garden/orchard for the purpose of supplementing feed are provided. Typical supplementary feed includes green beans, sweet corn (including stalks), zucchini, tomatoes, carrot tops at harvest, squash, pumpkins, and apples. We have also planted a one hundred tree orchard to provide fruit from July to December.
All supplemental feeds are provided and pigs eat what they choose based on preference. Further, we provide garlic to the pigs several times during their lifecycle. Garlic has wonderful anti-parasitic properties. We have found that this addition of garlic, in combination with a low-concentration of animals, space to move about, and Minnesota winters to be a powerful combination in battling parasites. In addition, our pigs live outdoors and are allowed to root and wallow, allowing them to get necessary minerals and nutrients from the soil.
