Independence Farm raises alpacas for their luxurious fiber. Our goal is to breed our alpacas toward a quality called lingering fineness. This means that the animal maintains the fleece qualities that it had as a baby (cria) into its adulthood. Unlike the Peruvians, we are partial to black. We think of alpaca as a luxury fiber worn on formal occasions and black is considered formal. We also breed toward docile dispositions. Alpacas are gentle animals by nature and we enjoy this as somewhat therapeutic after a long day at work. There are alpacas on the farm that are for sale, which you can view on our website. As our farm grows, we are learning new things to do with the fiber. It can be sold raw just as it comes off the animal, or with value added by having it washed and carded into roving, or spun into yarn. Ruth is learning about felting both wet and needle felting. In our farm store we sell a wide variety of alpaca products. There is clothing such as sweaters, hats, mittens, scarves, and socks. We also have items such as totes, rugs, boot inserts, finger puppets and needle felting kits. The best time to visit the farm is on Saturdays between Thanksgiving and Christmas during Open Farm Days but you are welcome to give us a call to arrange a visit of your own.
