We, Michael and Lynn Monroe, started FungusAmongUs Inc. in a small corner of our garage in Seattle, Washington in 1993. We were purchasing shiitake mushroom blocks from another farmer in Oregon and set out to find out what kind of market there was for gourmet mushrooms. The response was overwhelmingly positive (with a few skeptics thrown in for good measure) so we decided to take the plunge in 1994 and bought a small farm in Snohomish, Washington, which is about 30 miles north of Seattle. During the 9 years that we grew mushrooms, we were the largest Certified Organic gourmet mushroom farm in the state and expanded into oyster, lion's mane, maitake and reishi production as well as providing wild harvested mushrooms to our customers.
Several of our store chains asked us to come up with a dried line of cultivated and gourmet mushrooms because they were unhappy with the packaging and quality of the lines that were available to them. We expanded into providing bulk/ingredient mushrooms to bulk and manufacturing customers as well. After meeting with huge success on our regional level, we decided to foray into the national level and have been very pleased with the response we have received.
By sourcing both USDA Certified Organic and wild harvested dried mushrooms, we feel that we are able to meet most of the market's needs. We have added three Dried Organic Soup Mixes (vegan and vegetarian) and Melange Seasoning & Rub Marinades that make dish preparations even easier, catering to the growing population of time-deprived people everywhere. Our Italian Truffle Line is private labeled for us in Tuscany by a wonderful three generation family operated company and has been featured in many gourmet magazines such as Bon Appetit, Food & Wine, Town & Country, etc. as well as on The Today Show!
