The connection between consumer and farmer has been waning for decades, along with the integrity of mainstream farming practices. Groovy Heirlooms is a boutique, microgreen farm with the aim of rekindling that connection through every product we grow. Our farm uses innovative and environmentally sustainable agricultural practices that produce food with a superior nutritional content. Through an ongoing dialogue with our customers, it has become apparent that their familiarity with a farm and its practices is every bit as important to them as merely knowing that their produce bears an "organic" designation.
We take pains to educate our customers about our unique growing practices. Our "soil" is not actually soil at all, but rather it is shredded coconut husk, which is 100% renewable. This is critical, given that about 70% of the world's topsoilthe part of the soil that enables plants to germinate and holds all the beneficial bacteriais degraded. Our microgreens are grown in a fully renewable soilless "soil," which does not contribute to the further depletion of the earth's limited topsoil. We also hand-water our seeds (using only filtered water) to avoid runoff or waste. This allows us to use 90 percent less water than traditional farms. For example, with traditional farming practices, it takes 130 gallons to produce 3 ounces of peas. We produce that same amount of pea shoots with only 5 gallons and our peas have a superior nutrient density.
In our experience, it is vitally important for the customer to understand that in supporting our farm, they are making a choice that advances not only their own health but also the health and sustainability of the environment.
