Nine Oaks Farm is located in southwestern Michigan. We raise Black Cotswold sheep. The flock at Nine Oaks Farm began with the introduction of Meighan, a black-factored registered Black Cotswold and Gaylan a registered A.C.R.A. white Cotswold ram. In the fall of 1997, Seamus, a registered Black Cotswold ram, was added to the flock to replace Gaylan. American Livestock Breeds Conservancy lists the Cotswold sheep as a threatened heritage breed.
Today's flock provides a beautiful variety of lustrous whites, creams, gray and silver fleeces. We shear about every eight months, weather permitting, resulting in a staple length of 6 to 8 inches. Lambs are sheared at one year of age. This rare, one-time fleece is wonderfully soft and luscious with a staple length of 8 to 10 inches.
We select only lamb¢ï¿½??s wool for our combed top. This rare, premium fiber comes in a beautiful creamy white. Cotswold wool is delightfully lustrous and takes dyes nicely, resulting in rich, pure colors. Wool from our adult sheep, sheared every six to eights months, is sent to the mill to be washed, carded and made into roving. Only the choice wool from the top of the sheep¢ï¿½??s back is selected for washed locks. This wool best demonstrates the unique characteristics of Cotswold wool. The soft waves and wonderful luster resemble human hair. Washed locks are sought by doll makers.
Our millspun two-ply worsted, sport and fingerling weight yarns make exceptional garments. Cotswold yarn is strong and wears well, making it wonderful for knitting socks, sweaters and mittens. Try it for your next felted knit project. We offer natural cream and gray.
