Mountain Roots Food Project was started in 2010 in response to community need for backyard and community gardens. We launched our Farm to School program in 2011, were awarded 501(c)(3) status in 2012, and have since then grown rapidly in response to enthusiastic support from our community. We now manage 5 urban gardens, run a district-wide Farm to School program serving 2,000 pre-k through college youth with environmental education, youth gardens, and cafeteria collaborations. We run food security programs such as Backyard Harvest-- a fresh food donation program; SNAP+, which doubles food stamps at farmers markets; and we offer free cooking/nutrition classes to low-income families. We started our multi-farmer CSA in 2016 to expand markets for emerging small-scale farmers and broke ground on our community farm in the middle of last summer. The vision of the farm is to increase and expand our already existing programs not only will we be increasing sustainable food production, but we'll also be improving food education, community and environmental health, and food access across all income levels.
